Bill Vandenburgh was the first chairman of the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, serving from 1960-1965, and the first men’s basketball coach, 1961-1965. He led the Pioneers to consecutive 14-12 records during his first two years. He guided the Pioneers to an 8-4 second place showing in the Far Western Conference during the 1961-62 season. As the assistant men’s basketball coach from 1984-92, Vandenburgh was instrumental to the success of two CSUH West Regional Championship teams and three Northern California Athletic Conference Championship squads. During this period the Pioneers reached the NCAA Division II West Regional four times. Vandenburgh was also responsible for the planning and development of the Physical Education Building as well as other campus buildings while serving as Executive Dean from 1965-84.
