After his time as an outstanding long jumper at the University of Arizona, Dr. Andrews led student-athletes, serving as a track & field and gymnastics coach for the Pioneers. Here are some of the very notable achievements for Dr. Andrews while with the Pioneers.

  • Andrews was the first African-American track & field coach to be hired in the CSU system.
  • Coached 16 Track & Field All-Americans, including Pioneers Hall of Fame Members Kenny Bayless (Pioneers Hall of Fame 2019), Kermit Bayless (Pioneers Hall of Fame 1986), Edward Ray Clark (Pioneers Hall of Fame 1986), Willie Eashman (Pioneers Hall of Fame 1988), Marilyn King (Pioneers Hall of Fame 1986) and Collette Winlock (Pioneers Hall of Fame 1996)
  • Team finished 1st in the Far Western Conference Championships ('71)
  • Team finished 2nd in the Far Western Conference Championships ('69, '70, '72)
  • Team finished in the top-10 at the NCAA Division II Championships in 1970, 1971 and 1972
  • In 1971, Andrews coached Andy Weber to an individual National Championship in Javelin
  • Amateur Athletic Union National Coach - Women's Long Jump Coach for the All Army Track and Field Team
  • Served as the Meet Director for the Armed Forces Track Meet held at CSUH in 1987
  • Assistant Women's Gymnastics Coach from 1984 to 1986
  • Professor of Kinesiology at Cal State Hayward
  • Author of six publications, notably African Origins of Sports and Psychoblackology
  • Also inducted into the University of Arizona Athletics Hall of Fame as a former student-athlete in Tack & Field and Gymnastics
