Pioneer Athletics Hall of Fame
Sawyer was a three-time NCAA Division II All-American in the hammer, including an individual national championship in 1978. He finished third in 1976 and was a runner-up in 1977 at the Division II Nationals. Sawyer was second (24 points) in total number of points scored by a Cal State Hayward track and field athlete in NCAA Nationals. He was the team captain for the Pioneers 1977 National Championship team. Sawyer was the three-time FWC champion in the hammer (1976-78). He holds the CSUH record in the hammer (203’11) as well as the FWC-Nor Cal Athletic Conference record (199’11).
