Pioneer Athletics Hall of Fame
Two of the greatest years in Cal State Hayward basketball history occurred in the mid 80’s. Not only did the Pioneer men’s basketball team capture a pair of Northern California Athletic Conference titles, but they also won back-to-back NCAA Division II Western Regional Championships. Michael Harris was the point guard on Cal State’s two West Regional Championship men’s basketball teams in 1984-85 and 1985-86. It was Harris who sunk a 17 footer and added a three-point play in the late going as the Pioneers registered their first victory ever in NCAA post season play knocking off 16th ranked Norfolk State 64-61 in the opening round of the 1984-85 NCAA II West Regionals. Cal State Hayward captured the NCAA Division II West Regional Championship with a 51-48 victory over Cal State Northridge. Michael Harris, who scored 40 points in the two games, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
