Garner, was a Division II triple jump champion in back-to-back years, in 1978 and 1979. He was also an All-American in the long jump in 1979. Garner’s jump of 53-8 3/4 remains a Cal State record, and he later went on to jump a best of 55-1 1/2 in open competition. “Doug is the best triple jumper I have ever coached,” appraised longtime jumps coach Don Chu. “He had great jumping ability and natural speed. Doug also had the burning desire to win.”
