SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Senior
Claire Beaty carved more than a second off her school record in the 100 Breaststroke on Friday at San Diego State to lead another strong showing by the Cal State East Bay swim team at its midseason meet, the A3 Performance Invitational.
The No. 21 ranked Pioneers remain in fourth place in the team standings after two days, totaling 479 points.Â
Beaty swam 1:02.91 in the morning prelims to shatter her previous record, which she set last Spring en route to a First Team All-American performance at NCAA Division II Championships.
After a midday break, the Pioneers were back in the pool for the event event finals starting at 5:00 p.m. The program began with an extremely close 200 Medley Relay. The East Bay foursome of
Morgan McClure, Beaty,
Vivy Hua, and
Allie Klinger placed fifth, finishing less than four-tenths of a second behind conference rivals UC San Diego and Fresno Pacific.
The Pioneers did not have a qualifier for the "A" final in the next race, the 400 IM, which was dominated at the top of San Diego State swimmers.
Laurel Carpenter led the way for the Pioneers in the "B" final, taking 15th place overall in 4:36.43.
Klinger, a former Aztec, continued a strong performance this week against her previous squad by qualifying for the "A" final in the 100 Butterfly amidst a host of Division I competitors. Klinger swam 57.52 in the finals to take eighth place. Hua represented CSUEB in the "B" final and placed 16th overall.
McClure just missed qualifying for the "A" final in the 200 Freestyle, but she turned in an impressive effort in the evening, improving her time by more than a second and a half. The senior out-touched UCSD's Stephanie Sin by just five hundredths of second to notch a victory in the "B" final.
The 100 Breaststroke was next, and although Beaty didn't quite match her prelim time, she easily beat her previous record for the second time in the same day. Beaty touched the wall in 1:02.41 in the "A" final to finish in first place in a very tight race. It was the first individual victory for Cal State East Bay this week at the A3 Performance Invite.
Junior
Miranda McDonnell and newcomer
Tatum Roepke qualified for the "B" final in the final individual event of the evening, the 100 Backstroke. The pair scored points for the Pioneers by finishing 15th and 16th, respectively.
East Bay closed out the day with another fifth place relay finish as their 800 Freestyle Relay team of
Serene Augustain, McClure, Hua, and
Shelby Parker turned in a time of 7:42.76.Â
There is little drama in the team standings heading into the meet's final day, as the Pioneers are 84 points ahead of fifth-place Azusa Pacific and 200 points behind FPU in third. East Bay will close out the invitational on Saturday as the battle the rest of the eight-team field in the 200 Backstroke, 1650 freestyle, 100 Freestyle, 200 Breaststroke, 200 Butterfly, and 400 Freestyle Relay.
