EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Junior
Tehani Kong delivered an All-America performance Friday to lead the Cal State East Bay Pioneers on day four of the NCAA Division II Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving Championships at the Deaconess Aquatic Center.
Kong earned Second Team All-America honors in the 200 free after placing ninth overall in the finals with a time of 2:00.99, setting a new program record in the event. The junior qualified for the consolation final earlier in the day with a ninth-place prelim swim of 2:02.19 before improving her time by more than a second in the evening session to secure nine points for the Pioneers.
Alexia Fajardo just missed the cutoff for the finals in the 200 free, placing 18
th with a time of 2:04.51.
Freshman
Maggie Clemens also competed Friday in the 500 freestyle preliminaries, finishing 23rd overall with a time of 5:03.15. Teammate
Malana Kollath placed 29th in the event after touching the wall in 5:05.34.
Later in the evening session, Kong returned to the pool to lead the Pioneers in the 200 freestyle relay alongside Fajardo, Clemens and Kollath. The quartet posted a time of 1:37.34 to finish 17th overall.
Through 27 events, the Pioneers sit 18th in the team standings with 31 points as the national championships continue through Saturday.
