HAYWARD, Calif. – After leading the Cal State East Bay swim program for nearly a decade, head coach Shane Pelton has announced he will be leaving to accept the head coaching position at CSU Bakersfield. Cal State East Bay thanks Pelton for his leadership and contributions to the Pioneer swim program over the past several seasons.

"I truly loved my time at East Bay. But the opportunity at Cal State Bakersfield allows me to continue doing what I love—coaching, leading, and building" said Pelton.

Pelton, who has led the program since 2016, guided the Pioneers to multiple Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PCSC) championships and sustained success at the NCAA Division II level. Under his direction, Cal State East Bay produced numerous NCAA qualifiers, All-Americans, and program record-holders, while consistently competing among the top teams in the conference. In 2026, Pelton and his staff were recognized as the PCSC Coaching Staff of the Year.

In addition to the team's competitive achievements, Pelton played a key role in the overall growth and development of the program. His emphasis on culture, accountability, and student-athlete success helped elevate the standard for Pioneer swimming both in and out of the pool.

"We are grateful to Coach Pelton for his stewardship of the Cal State East Bay swim program over the last decade," said Athletic Director Allison Kern. "His conference championships, NCAA appearances and school records are a testament to his ability to coach at an elite level. However, his ability to build culture and the relationships he has developed with his student-athletes will leave an indelible mark on the program. We will miss Coach Pelton, but I am excited for him as he takes the next step in his coaching journey."

Throughout his tenure, Pelton mentored a wide range of student-athletes, supporting their academic and athletic pursuits while fostering a positive and competitive team environment. His leadership helped position the program for continued success moving forward.

Pelton leaves a lasting impact on Cal State East Bay through his commitment to excellence, leadership, and dedication to the student-athlete experience.
