Meet Results: CSUEB 179, APU 109 - FHAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay swimming finished off a successful return to competitive action at Pioneer Pool on Saturday with a 179-109 win over Azusa Pacific.
Courtney Schwiesow,
Mariam Lowe, and
Alyssa Tenney each won two individual events in helping the Pioneers prevail.
"We were able to play to our strengths to earn the win. I was happy with our sprinting today," said East Bay Head Coach
Ben Loorz. "
Alyssa Littlefield winning the 50-yard freestyle was one of her biggest dual meet wins at East Bay."
Littlefield later completed a bunched group of Pioneer finishers to round out a sweep in the 100-yard freestyle. It was another East Bay Alyssa (Tenney) who won the 100 (54.11) earning her first of two event wins on the day. She out-touched teammates
Noelle Farrar (54.20) and Littlefield (54.63) for the victory.
"Most teams live or die with sprinting in collegiate swimming. Sweeping the 100 free was huge," Loorz added.
Tenney picked up her second win of the day in the 200 individual medley (2:12.62).
Makila Schuck (2:16.43) and
Shaylyn Brownell (2:17.99) completed one of four 1-2-3 sweeps for Cal State East Bay on the day.
The other pair came in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events with Schwiesow leading the way. She cleared the field by over a full second in the 100 (1:07.54) and more than three seconds in the 200 (2:27.53).
Lowe opened Saturday's action with the opening two lengths of the pool as the backstroke swimmer for the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:51.90). The Pioneer 'A' and 'B' relays finished first and second respectively to put the home side out front 15-2.
"Going one-two in the medley relay was a great tone setter for the meet. I was pleased with how we stepped up today," said Loorz. "Our relays and sprints looked good."
APU (2-3) freshman Rosalee Mira Santa Ana won both the mile (17:31.52) and the 500 free (5:06.52) to lead the visiting Cougars. Teammate Heidi Zuniga paced her way to victory in the 200 butterfly (2:13.34).
Cal State East Bay (6-5) will close out the 2014-15 regular season at home on Friday, Jan. 30, against NCAA Division I foe San José State.
