Good Pitching, Timely Hitting Lift Pioneers to Victory Over CCAA Leader Chico State

HAYWARD, Calif. –
The Pioneer baseball team received good pitching and timely hitting in a 6-3 victory over CCAA leader Chico State on April 22. The victory was the first home win over Chico State since
1995.

Pioneer hurler Brandyn Bell improved to 5-2 for the season. Bell blanked the Wildcats for seven innings before giving up three runs in the eighth. In eight innings of work, Bell gave up three runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Zachary Wong hurled a scoreless ninth inning to record his fifth save of the season.

“I felt that Brandyn was the key to the victory,” Pioneer coach Dirk Morrison said. “He pitched well and we played good defense behind him.”

Cal State East Bay, 12-26 in CCAA play and 14-31 overall, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After two outs, Andrew Woolfe singled and scored on a double off the bat of Nick McManus. Josh Rush followed with a base hit to score McManus with the second run of the inning.

Rush singled to knock in Aaron Brown as the Pioneers grabbed a 3-0 lead after three innings.

In the fifth inning, Brown opened the inning with a walk and later scored on a Lincoln Clapper single.

The Pioneers built a 6-0 lead in the seventh as Clapper tripled home Rush and later scored on a stolen base.

Cody Foster doubled home a pair of runs as the Wildcats scored three times in the eighth inning.

Cal State East Bay banged out 10 hits including a pair of doubles and a triple.

Josh Rush was 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs while Clapper had a pair of hits and drove in two runs.
Brown scored a pair of runs to contribute to the Pioneer victory.

“We had good at bats and came up with some clutch two out hits, Morrison said. “We're playing good baseball right now.”

Foster had a pair of hits with two RBIs for Chico State (20-8 CCAA, 26-9).

The two teams will conclude the four-game series with an April 23 doubleheader at Pioneer Field. The doubleheader will begin at 11:00 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., the Pioneer baseball program will honor their eight seniors playing their final home game on Pioneer Field. The eight seniors to be honored are: Josh Rush, Nick McManus, Paul Jinkens, Hector Iribe, Zach Aguirre, Keith Schwecke, Johnny Volk and Jared Berrier.
