HAYWARD, Calif. -- After picking up its first series sweep in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play since 2015, the Cal State East Bay baseball team will look to keep its momentum going this week with a four-game series on the road at Stanislaus State.
The teams have moved up their doubleheader to Friday in order to avoid rain in the forecast and will open the series with a twinbill.
WEEK IN REVIEWÂ
The Pioneers are coming off one of their best weekends of the
Mike Cummins era against Cal State San Bernardino, taking four straight from the Coyotes at Pioneer Field. They out-scored CSUSB by a total of 28-13 in the series, racking up 21 hits in Saturday's doubleheader, then taking advantage of 10 walks and four hit-by-pitches in Sunday's finale.Â
Offensively,
Steve Robinson was red hot going 5-for-9 with three walks.
Ryan McSwain was an effective catalyst in the leadoff spot, going 8-for-18, scoring four runs, and blasting his first home run of the season.
The highlight of the weekend came on the pitcher's mound, however, as junior
Brian Martinez and freshman
Blake Corsentino both went the distance on Saturday. Martinez continued his impressive start to the season by allowing four runs in a nine-inning effort for his second victory. Corsentino was even more outstanding in the back end of the doubleheader, going the distance for his first collegiate win. The rookie tossed a two-hit shutout with zero walks, needing just 78 pitches to carve up the Coyote lineup in an 8-0 victory.
SENIOR SLUGGERS
The Pioneers are batting .292 with a .390 on-base percentage as a team through 14 games, both of which rank fourth out of 12 schools in the CCAA. East Bay's senior hitters have been leading the way, with Kysosuke Ushimaru (.391),
Dakota Conners (.359),
Adam Hollar (.348), and Robinson (.342) all hitting over .340.
Joey Dice isn't quite there in terms of average, but he leads the team with 14 runs batted in. Junior
Jacob Eder (.333 avg) has also been solid on both sides of the ball as the primary shortstop.
THIEVING WAYS
East Bay leads all CCAA teams -- by a substantial margin -- with 24 stolen bases in 32 attempts. Individually, Ushimaru (5 SB), Hollar (4 SB), and McSwain (4 SB) have three of the top five stolen base totals in the league.Â
HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE THAT?
CSUEB has an unremarkable 5.29 team ERA thus far this season, but the staff turned in a strong collective performance last weekend against the Coyotes. Third-year reliever
Ransome Alexander (3.12 ERA) and newcomers
Kyle Basch (2.70 ERA) and
TJ Myers (4.50 ERA) have all been effective out of the bullpen, but the most impressive work has been done by sophomore
Mark Woinarowicz. The right-hander has a 1.29 ERA in five appearances, is holding batters to a .217 average, and has converted all three of his save opportunities.
SCOUTING STANISLAUS
The Warriors swept Chico State in a doubleheader to open their CCAA schedule, but dropped three out of four last weekend at Sonoma State. Stanislaus has a .261 team batting average, led by Braeden Oki (.370 avg, .473 obp) and Grant Bunker (.333 avg, 3 HR, 10 RBI). Their pitching staff ranks third in the CCAA with a 3.58 ERA, receiving outstanding work from Chase Wheatcroft (1-0, 1.21 ERA, 3 SV, 22.1 IP) and Rylan Tinsley (3-0, 0.00 ERA, 19.2 IP).
The Warriors won three out of four against the Pioneers when the teams met last season in Hayward.
