No. 22 Pioneers Erase All Four Opponents at Slug Shootout

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., -- The No. 22 ranked Cal State East Bay swim team had another impressive performance on Friday, earning head-to-head victories over all four opponents in a five-team dual meet at UCSC Pool.
 
The Pioneers topped the host, UC Santa Cruz, as well as Biola, Mills College, and College of Idaho. The closest score of the four matchups was against Biola, but CSUEB still handled its conference rival with relative ease, 542-516.
 
The meet opened with a victory for the Pioneers in the 200 Medley Relay, as the foursome of Victoria Zukeran, Rebecca Bay, Allie Klinger and Isabel Rishwain finished in 1:51.88 just ahead of Biola in second place. CSUEB's "B" relay also finished fifth in the event.
 
That was followed by the longest race of the day, the 1000 Free, which saw a dominant effort by the Pioneers. Peyton Wayment captured second place in 10:48.39, eight seconds ahead of teammate Morgan Frank in third place. Junior Landry Walker took fourth to give East Bay three of the top four finishers.
 
They accomplished that feat again in the next race, the 200 Free, although Biola's Liza Parahnevich earned the victory. Serene Augustain took second place in 1:57.39, out-touching Isabel Rishwain by a second. Maddie Wittkowske finished fourth as the Pioneers showed off their impressive depth early in the meet.
 
College of Idaho got its first event win of the day in the 50 Free, but the Pioneers had two swimmers close behind as Allie Klinger earned second-place points in 25.06. Katrionna Furness notched fourth with a time of 25.65 and Abigail Mitchell touched the wall fifth in 25.72.
 
Victoria Zukeran once again finished second, this time in the 200 IM. The senior complete all four strokes in 2:12.02. Freshman Morgan Frank finished fifth in a time of 2:17.23 and Peyton Wayment earned points as well with a seventh place finish.
 
Competing in her third event of the afternoon, Victoria Zukeran picked up a decisive win in the 100 Butterfly, touching the wall in 58.09. Leah Robinson earned fourth place points with a time of 1:02.18 and Sofia Moufarrej came in seventh touching the wall at 1:02.58.
 
That was followed by the 100 Free, in which the trio of Allie Klinger, Maddie Wittkowske, and Abigail Mitchell finished second, fifth, and sixth, respectively.
 
In the 100 Back, Biola's Liza Parahnevich and Nicole Chang took the to two spots. Alondra Ortiz finished third at a time of 1:02.07, slightly ahead of teammates Paige Branson and Katrionna Furness who clocked in fifth and sixth place.
 
In the distance races, Isabel Rishwain, Serene Augustain and Leah Robinson all rallied in one after another for third, fourth and fifth place in the 500 Free.
 
The Pioneers had another strong showing in the next race, the 100 Breast. Sophomore Rebecca Bay placed third, finishing in 1:09.92. Victoria Zukeran and Landry Walker notched fifth and sixth places with times of 1:11.83 and 1:12.80.
 
The meet concluded with another impressive relay effort for CSUEB. Morgan Frank, Allie Klinger, Serene Augustain and Isabel Rishwain were victorious in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:40.00, winning by more than a second. East Bay's "B" team placed fourth respectively.
 
The Pioneers will be back in action Saturday morning for the annual Bay Area Invitational at at Trefethen Aquatic Center, starting at 10 a.m.
