HAYWARD, Calif. -- The No. 24 ranked Cal State East Bay swim team turned in a strong collective performance on Friday in a dual meet against San Jose State at Pioneer Pool.
The Pioneers were defeated 176-86 by the Division I Spartans, but picked up two event victories and raced to close finishes in several other events. It was an impressive competitive effort for the team in their penultimate home meet less than a month away from conference championships.Â
The Pioneers showed they were not intimidated by the visiting Spartans right from the outset. SJSU managed a first place finish in the opening event, the 200 Medley Relay, but the CSUEB foursome of
Vivy Hua,
Rebecca Bay,
Victoria Zukeran, and
Allie Klinger was just two tenths of a second behind them.
The longest event in a relatively brief 14-event program was the 500 Free, for which
Serene Augustain was East Bay's top finisher. She notched second place by a half-second, touching the wall in 5:12.67.
Maddie Hulse led the way for CSUEB in the 200 Free, taking third in 1:57.53. That was followed by a pair of sprint races in which the Pioneers had runner-up individuals.
Vivy Hua was out-touched in the 50 Back by 0.1 to place second in 27.23.
Ciera Nasso then swam to second place in the 50 Breast in 32.33.
The Pioneers then proceeded to earn two straight wins on dramatic finishes heading into the intermission.
Tatum Roepke took first in the 100 Fly by just 0.16 seconds, touching the wall in 58.79.
Alondra Ortiz took third in that event, and Sofia Mourfarrej won the second heat in 1:00.62.Â
The next race was even more dramatic with a finish that was about as close as it can be. Klinger was victorious in the 50 Free with a time of 24.27, just two hundredths of a second ahead of the runner-up.
After the break, Hua led CSUEB with a third place finish in the 100 Free, and then Ortiz paced the Pioneers with fourth place in the 100 Back.
Bay followed that with a solid effort to secure a runner-up finish in the 100 Breast, finishing less than a second behind the winner in 1:09.07.
Next came a rare occurrence as the teams raced the 250 Free. It produced a dramatic ending with Augustain finishing just two-tenths of a second off the leader in 2:29.43.
That was followed by the 50 Fly, which was one of the strongest events for the Pioneers as they posted three of the top four finishers. Roepke led the way in second place, followed closely by Hua in third and Zukeran in fourth.
Zukeran was back in the pool for the next race following the second intermission. She swam to a runner-up finish in the 100 IM in 1:02.42, just ahead of Klinger in third place.
The afternoon finished with the 200 Free Relay, in which the quartet of Augustain,
Jande Monteon, Roepke, and Klinger took second place in 1:40.64.Â
The Pioneers will be back in action Saturday afternoon to wrap up their 2018-19 home schedule. The scheduled dual meet against Nevada has been cancelled as the Wolfpack are unable to travel due to heavy snow in the Tahoe area. Instead the Pioneers will race an intrasquad meet following the annual "Senior Day" ceremony, which is scheduled for 2 p.m.
