LA MIRADA, Calif., -- The No. 21 Cal State East Bay swim team finished in third place with 1,114 total points in the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PCSC) Championship after yet another historic day at Splash Regional Aquatic Center.

Two more Pioneer champions were named and another program record fell on the final day of competition. Second year head coach Shane Pelton was also named Women's Swim Coach of the Meet.

"I'm kind of lost for words at this moment," expressed Pelton. "I think proud is an understatement on the way I feel about this team. They really came together and put together an incredible conference championship meet."

Senior Claire Beaty became PCSC Champion in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:13.57. Junior Laurel Carpenter 12th (2:24.91) in the "B" final.

Fellow senior Morgan McClure became PCSC Champion in the 100 IM as she also tied her school and meet record with a time of 57.03. Four more Pioneer swimmers scored in the event as junior Rita Gomez finished 10th (1:00.39) and senior Yingfei Zhang finished 13th (1:00.99) in the "B" final, followed by junior Ryleigh Weight (1:02.23) and senior Cassidy Water (1:05.48) in the "E" final.

Freshman Peyton Wayment set a new school record in the 1650 Free event as she finished 7th with a record time of 17:22.58.

"It was great to see Peyton have a breakthrough meet," explained Pelton. "She is setting up for a great 4 years at East Bay and holding those distance records for a long time."

The Pioneers racked up points in the 200 Back event as freshman Tatum Roepke placed 5th (2:04.56) and junior Miranda McDonnell (2:06.93) finished 7th (2:06.93) in the "A" final. Senior Kali Kearns logged a 12th place finish (2:09.13) followed by Ryleigh Weight in 15th (2:10.94).

"Tatum Roepke continued to shine having a career swim meet as a freshman," Pelton said. "I don't even know if she realized what kind of performance she had this week. It was a very special performance and the future is bright for her."

Cal State East Bay also put on a strong team performance in the 100 Free led by a 6th place finish from sophomore Allie Kinger (51.86) and junior Vivy Hua's 8th place (52.42) finish. Senior Shelby Parker followed with a 16th place (53.60) finish and junior Maddie Hulse finished in 22nd (54.12).

Senior Madison Faulkner paced the Piooners with a 7th place (2:08.00) finish in the 200 Butterfly followed by sophomore Victoria Zukeran who finished in 9th place (2:06.71). Senior Liz Coker followed with a 17th place (2:09.91) finish to round up the event for East Bay.

"I'm not one to get too emotional, but watching Tori Zukeran's 200 Fly and seeing the emotion on her face after the race is the reason I coach," Pelton mentioned. "To see that breakthrough that has been 4 years in the making was incredible."

The Cal State East Bay 400 Free Relay team finished third in their event with a time of 3:27.66.

"This meet was an historic one for East Bay," shared Pelton. "As a team we broke 7 school records, but from top to bottom this team made themselves known in one of the fastest women's swimming conferences in Division II. We're not done yet thought, still more work and even more special moments to be had at NCAA's in a month from now"

Pelton also had this to say about team and assistant coaches: "I need to thank both our assistant coaches, Lauren and Kevin, who really helped create the culture that led to our team's performance," Pelton said. "Lastly, I wanted to recognize all the seniors. It's through their incredible leadership and diverse personalities that make this team special. We are going truly miss all nine of these ladies, but we know they are going to move on outside of the pool and be extremely successful women."

The Pioneer Swim Team will now prepare for the NCAA Championships in Greensboro, NC at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The NCAA Championships will begin Wednesday March 14 through Saturday, March 17.
