LA MIRADA, Calif.
-- Three school records fell on Wednesday in the opening set of events at 2017-18 Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PCSC) Championships, as Cal State East Bay sits in fifth place in the team standings with 148 points.

The Pioneers scored points in three events at Splash! Regional Aquatic Center and secured a spot for their 800 Free Relay team at NCAA Division II Championships next month.

"Tonight went well beyond our expectations to be truthful," said head coach Shane Pelton. "I think everyone raced extremely well and set the tone for this long week. I think the swimmers showed they weren't afraid of attacking our races, and in return, were rewarded with some great results."

Freshman Peyton Wayment opened the afternoon program by setting a new school record in the 1000 Free. She lowered Rachel Shimizu's mark by three full seconds, touching the wall in 10:25.34. Wayment finished in ninth place overall to lead the Pioneers, followed closely by rookie teammate Serene Augustain in 11th with a time of 10:29.19. Junior Ryleigh Weight also scored for CSUEB, taking 23rd place in 10:49.54.

East Bay followed that with a solid third place finish in the 200 Medley Relay, which saw No. 4 UC San Diego narrowly out-touch No. 9 Fresno Pacific for the win. The Pioneers finished in 1:43.65, nearly two seconds ahead of Alaska in fourth.

The team finished the evening on an extremely high note, toppling the Sunbirds to take second place in the 800 Free Relay in school record-setting time. The foursome of Morgan McClure, Vivy Hua, Serene Augustain, and Shelby Parker notched a time of 7:28.38, a half second better than the mark the Pioneers set at last season's national championships.

"I was extremely impressed with our freshmen," Pelton praised. "For their first conference championship, they rose to the occasion and swam tough in some pressure situations. Peyton and Serene put together two great 1000s. Tatum Roepke swam her fastest 50 back split of the season in the 200 Medley Relay, the first "A" relay of her career. And Serene stepped back up on the block to help the 800 Free Relay break our school record and put up a top-10 time in the country. That was not an easy task for a meet of this magnitude."

Their success in the 800 Free Relay was built largely on an incredible split by McClure, who broke the oldest record in the books at Cal State East Bay. The senior's 200 Free time of 1:49.07 shattered the previous mark, set five years ago in this same venue by former All-American Jenel Lopez.

"Morgan did something special today and I was very proud of her," Pelton noted. "She faced some fears and swam the race we knew she was capable of swimming. It only gets better from here from her."

McClure now holds five individual records in the Pioneer history books after posting a time that currently ranks as the seventh-fastest in Division II this year.

"One thing you won't see in the results was the time trial from Laurel Carpenter in the 100 Breast," Pelton added. "Her race ended the session just the way we wanted to. We cheered on Lo as she dropped her personal best by three and a half seconds in the race. Lo is an inspiration to this team and is consistently one of the hardest workers, which is really paying off as she's having a career year."

With one of the two diving events out of the way and several of CSUEB's best events still to come, the Pioneers are in good shape as a team after one day. Thursday's program will consist of the 500 Free, 200 Individual Medley, 50 Free, and 200 Free Relay, with prelims starting at 9:30 a.m. and event finals at 4:30 p.m.
