Augustain's 500 Free Record, McClure's 200 IM Title Highlight Day Two at PCSC Meet

Results: Day 1 | Day 2

LA MIRADA, Calif.
-- It was another historic day for the Cal State East Bay swim team Thursday at Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PCSC) Championships, as the Pioneers notched another school record and an individual event title, while moving up to third place in the team standings.

The Pioneers are a few points ahead of Azusa Pacifc despite not accruing anything from diving events, and they're just 90 points behind No. 9 Fresno Pacific.

Freshman Serene Augustain had a memorable day at Splash! Regional Aquatic Center. She started off the day by swimming a school record time in the prelims of the 500 Free, qualifying for the evening's "A" final. Augustain's record stood for just a few hours, as she swam even faster in the finals to set a new program mark. Her time of 4:59.74 was good for 5th place and makes her the first CSUEB woman in history to swim a 500 Free in under five minutes.

That race was particularly lucrative for the Pioneers in terms of points, as Peyton Wayment scored in 11th place (5:05.27), Kali Kearns took 15th (5:09.39), and Maddie Hulse finished 16th (5:10.35) in the "B" final. Ryleigh Weight placed 21st with a strong "C" final time of 5:09.07.

That was followed by the 200 IM, which senior Morgan McClure won by more than a full second to defend her PCSC title in the event. She didn't quite beat her own school record time, but she did set a new PCSC Championships record with her first place mark of 2:01.41 that ranks as the third-fastest time in Division II this season.

Fellow senior Claire Beaty also qualified for the "A" final in the 200 IM and took fifth place in 2:04.18. Laurel Carpenter scored for the Pioneers as well with a 23rd place finish in 2:11.66.

The Pioneers had another strong showing in the shortest sprint of the meet, the 50 Free, with two swimmers reaching the "A" final. Sophomore Allie Klinger finished in fifth place in 23.66, followed closely by junior Vivy Hua in sixth in 24.11. Shelby Parker tied for 11th place with a "B" final time of 24.21, and Elizabeth Cocker scored points in 21st place with a "C" final time of 24.86.

East Bay finished off the evening with another excellent relay performance. The 200 Free Relay was an extraordinarily exciting finish, as UC San Diego, Fresno Pacific, and CSUEB came down to the wire together and all finished within three tenths of a second. The Tritons out-touched FPU for the victory, while the Pioneers took third place -- their third top-three relay in as many events this week. The foursome of Klinger, McClure, Hua, and Parker posted a time of 1:34.07, which ranks them No. 11 in the country.

Midway through the championship meet, the Pioneers have already seen four records fall and McClure capture her fourth career PCSC event title. She will look to make it five on Friday, a long program that features the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, and 400 Medley Relay. As with the past two days, prelims start at 9:30 a.m. with event finals commencing at 4:30 p.m.
