SOUTH GATE, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay swim team picked up three more event victories on Sunday and ultimately cruised to a first place finish out of eight teams at the SoCal Collegiate Winter Invitational.
The Pioneers totaled 2,283.5 points at the three-day midseason meet, easily out-pacing conference rivals Loyola Marymount (1519), Azusa Pacific (1341.5), and Biola (1303).Â
The final day's action was highlighted by another relay victory for the Pioneers, two first place finishes for junior
Victoria Zukeran, and a historic swim by sophomore
Peyton Wayment.
Wayment raced in the first event of the evening finals session, which was also the longest event of the weekend. She turned in a commanding victory in the 1650 Free, and remarkably, set a record before she had even finished the race.Â
Wayment swam the first 1000 meters in 10:22.53, which breaks her own school record at that distance. She bested her time from last year's PCSC Championships by almost three seconds. The sophomore went onto win the event by nearly 30 seconds, and her 1650 time of 17:12:54 is also a new program record -- almost 10 seconds faster than her previous mark. Both new records also qualify as NCAA "B" cuts.Â
While witnessing some history, the Pioneers also racked up substantial points in the 1650 Free, as
Serene Augustain finished fourth,
Landry Walker placed sixth, and
Madison Chase took eighth.
Zukeran grabbed the spotlight in the next event, scoring a dramatic victory in the 100 IM by just a half-second. She touched the wall in 1:00.07. The Pioneers had three swimmers in the "A" final, as freshmen
Rebecca Bay and
Ciera Nasso finished sixth and eighth, respectively.
Vivy Hua actually swam the fastest time of the prelim heats, but did not compete in the final. Nor did
Laurel Carpenter, who finished fifth in prelims, or
Ryleigh Weight, who qualified seventh.
East Bay didn't win the next race, but once again it did accrue the most points. Freshman
Alondra Ortiz was the top Pioneer finisher in the 200 Back, placing fourth in 2:08.19. She led a trio of CSUEB swimmers in the "A" final, as
Miranda McDonnell took fifth and
Paige Branson took seventh. Sophomore
Tatum Roepke won the "B" final to score ninth place points as well, posting a time that would've been runner-up in the "A" final.
The Pioneers narrowly missed another win in the next race, as
Allie Klinger was out-touched by APU's Elodie Poo Cheong in the 100 Free. Klinger settled for second place in 51.51, which stands as an NCAA "B" cut. Hua was right behind her in third place, with
Isabel Rishwain placing sixth and Augustain taking seventh. Hua notched a "B" cut as well with her prelim time of 51.92. CSUEB also had six additional swimmers score in the "B" and "C" finals of the 100 Free.
That was followed by the 200 Breast, in which the Pioneers were well-represented with four swimmers in the "A" final. Bay led the way in fifth place in 2:28.21, followed by Carpenter, Nasso, and Walker in the next three positions. Chase also won the "B" final to secure ninth place points.Â
The last individual event of the meet was the 100 Fly, which saw the second victory of the day for Zukeran. She won the race by a full second, touching the wall in 2:06.05 . Sophomore
Sofia Moufarrej also impressed, reaching the "A" final and notching a fourth place finish.
East Bay closed out the weekend on a high note by winning the 400 Free Relay and cementing their dominant victory in the team standings. The foursome of Klinger, Hua, Roepke, and Augustain finished in 3:30.82 to lead the way, with CSUEB's "B" team placing fourth, followed by the "C" team in sixth.Â
After an extremely successful midseason meet, the Pioneers will head home to prepare for final exams, then take a break for the holidays before returning to competition on Jan. 5 for a four-team dual meet at UC San Diego.Â
