Beaty's Breaststroke Wins Highlight First Home Meet

HAYWARD, Calif.
-- The Cal State East bay swim team was a defeated by Division I squads San Jose State, 153-106, and Nevada, 167-91, in a double dual meet Friday on a beautiful afternoon at Pioneer Pool. It was the first home meet of the season for the No. 21 ranked Pioneers.

Senor Claire Beaty took home first-place finishes in both the 100 and 200 Breaststroke to highlight the day for East Bay. They were the only two event victories of the day for the home team. Fellow senior Morgan McClure almost gave the Pioneers a third, but was out-touched in the 200 Freestyle and had to settle for runner-up. 

It was the first competition for the Pioneers since Dec. 19, as the team now begins to gear up for next month's Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference championships down in La Mirada. 

The afternoon started with CSUEB taking fifth place in the 200 Medley Relay, as the foursome of Tatum Roepke, Claire Beaty, Allie Klinger, and Vivy Hua finished behind the "A" and "B" team for both SJSU and Nevada.

That was followed by the longest event of the day, the 1000 Free. Freshman Peyton Wayment had a solid showing to lead the Pioneers, taking third place in 10:50.87 and finishing ahead of the Spartans' top swimmer.

McClure followed that by placing second in the 200 Free with a time of 1:53.58, as Nevada's Caitlyn Richardson out-touched her by 0.17 seconds. Hua took sixth in that race in 1:56.57.

Junior Miranda McDonnell paced a quintet of Pioneers in the 100 Back, finishing sixth in 1:00.69. She was followed closely by Roepke (1:01.41) in seventh and Ryleigh Weight (1:01.72) in eighth.

Beaty notched East Bay's first victory of the day in the 100 Breast, outlasting Nevada's Jamie Reynolds by .24 seconds with a time of 1:07.58 thanks to a strong final 15 yards. Yingfei Zhang took fourth in that race in 1:09.10.

Senior Madison Faulkner followed that with a strong performance in the the 200 Butterfly. She took second place, beating swimmers from both San Jose State and Nevada, with a time of 2:12.13.

Fellow senior Shelby Parker was the Pioneer top Pioneer finished in the 50 Free sprint. The 2016-17 All-American finished seventh overall in 25.34, just ahead of teammate Abigail Mitchell (25.89).

Hua shined in the next race, finishing as runner up ahead of Nevada's Diana Sokolowska and all three Spartan entrants. The junior touched the wall in 53.38, followed by McClure in fourth place with a time of 53.61.

McDonnell was the top Pioneer in the next backstroke event as well, placing fifth in the 200 Back in 2:13.60, just ahead of Weight (2:14.31). 

Beaty picked up her second win of the afternoon in the 200 Breast with another exciting finish. She touched the wall three-tenths of a second ahead of Nevada's Donna Depolo, notching a time of 2:23.88. Rita Gomez took fifth in that race in 2:32.75, followed by Laurel Carpenter in sixth and Jensyn Breakfield in seventh.

Freshman Serene Augustain paced the Pioneers in the final distance event, finishing fourth in the 500 Free with a time of 5:17.75. Wayment took sixth in 5:23.31, followed by Maddie Hulse in seventh in 5:24.63.

Klinger and Faulkner tied for fifth place to lead East Bay in the next race, the 100 Butterfly. The pair recorded identical times of 1:00.60, just ahead of Roepke in seventh (1:01.17). 

Beaty finished off her day with a sixth place finish in the 200 IM, completing all four strokes in 2:16.17. Carpenter placed eighth in that event in 2:17.48, followed by Gomez in ninth in 2:17.99.

The Pioneers closed out the meet with a solid showing in the 200 Free Relay, finishing in 1:40.76. The quartet or Hua, Klinger, Parker, and Zhang was out-touched by Nevada's "B" to record a fourth place finish.

The squad is back in action next week as it enters the stretch run before conference championships. They travel to the same venue that hosts the championship meet in La Mirada next Saturday for a five-way dual meet PCSC foes Azusa Pacific, Biola, and Concordia-Irvine, as well as Soka University of American.
