SAN FRANCISCO -- The Cal State East Bay men's track team had a memorable weekend at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival with several impressive performances, led by freshman
Pedro Cruz's NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time in the 10k.
Cruz's personal best time of 30:48.81 placed him 26th overall in the event. It stands as the third-fastest 10,000 meter time in program history, and it also ranks third this season among all runners in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
The Pioneers entered eight runners in the 5,000 meters with impressive results at the top.
Esteban Leon joined Cruz as the second CSUEB runner to break 15 minutes this season, crossing the tape in 14:59.32 to place 92nd overall. His PR time currently ranks 12th in the CCAA.
Israel Sotelo also posted a CCAA qualifying mark in the 5k. He finished 142nd in the race with a time of 15:29.03 that ranks him just outside the top 25 in the conference.
The rest of the East Bay distance squad all finished fairly close to one another.
Kyle Fetter was at the head of the pack in 174th place in 15:51.11, followed by
Leo Skellenger (15:54.88) in 178th,
Jesus Leon (15:58.26) in 185th,
Irvin Parada (16:03.82) in 189th,
Zach Kanlong (16:04.40) in 190th, and
Miguel Morales (16:04.56) in 191st.
Freshman
Jeremy Shaw was the lone Pioneer to run two races at the Distance Carnival. He placed 66th overall in the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.24 that ranks 21st among CCAA runners this Spring. Shaw followed that up by taking 120th in the 1500 meters in 4:11.23.
Alberto Venegas paced a trio of East Bay runners in the 1500. He finished in 67th place in 4:01.59.
Christian Moncada was just behind Shaw, placing 131st with a time of 4:16.87.
Deion Molina had a solid showing in the 1-Mile, finishing four laps in 21st place with a time of 4:40.84. He was followed by
Cameron Olson in 30th in 4:47.21.
Luke Leahy led the way in the 2-Mile in 13th place overall. The freshman posted a time of 10:15.96, ahead of senior teammate
Noah Siegel, who placed 25th in 10:42.73.
Finally, head coach
Tony Nicolosi sent sophomore sprinter
Aaron Jones to the Stanford Invitational to race against top Division I competition. Jones ran well in both his events, though he fell a bit short of personal best times. On Friday he placed 25th in the 400 meters with a time of 49.83. Saturday he took 23rd place overall in the 200 meters in 22.63.
The Pioneers have just two meets remaining on the schedule before CCAA Championships the first week in May, starting next Friday and Saturday at the Chico State Distance Carnival.
