McClure Earns All-America Honors, Pioneers Break Another Record at NCAA's

Results:  Wednesday  |  Thursday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
-- The second day of the 2016-17 NCAA Division II Swim Championships was an exciting one for Cal State East Bay, as the Pioneers broke yet another school record and junior Morgan McClure secured All-American status in the 400 IM.

All told, CSUEB accumulated 29 points on Thursday, putting them in 13th place in the team standings at the midway point of the national championship meet at the Birmingham Crossplex Natatorium.

The fireworks started for the Pioneers in the very first event of the morning prelims. The 200 Free Relay team, which was seeded 21st, finished 11th to qualify for the evening consolation finals. The quartet of Vivy Hua, McClure, Shelby Parker, and Madison Hauanio posted a time of 1:33.84 to set a new school record.

The Pioneers broke the previous mark by just 0.04 seconds. That record had stood since the 2014 NCAA Championships, which was East Bay's last trip to the national meet. The record was particularly notable for Hauanio, who swam the anchor leg today and also anchored when the previous mark was set three years ago.

Those four swimmers returned to the pool in the first event of the evening program, and they improved one spot to finish 10th in the nation with a time of 1:34.22. The Pioneers picked up 14 points in the 200 Free Relay to maintain their top-15 status.

One day after just missing the championship final in the 200 IM, McClure made it solidly within the top eight in the 400 IM. She placed seventh in prelims, securing First Team All-America honors in the event, the first such achievement of her career.

McClure carved a full second off her prelim time in this evening's finals. She swam an outstanding championship race, placing sixth and touching the wall in 4:22.71 to add 13 points to the team total. Already a Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference champion in three events, McClure is the first Pioneer swimmer to capture All-American status since 2014.

The last event of the day for CSUEB was the 400 Medley Relay, and the Pioneers turned in a tremendous effort to sneak into the consolation finals and score points for the team. The foursome of Mariam Lowe, Claire Beaty, Parker, and Hauanio posted a time of 3:48.62 and were the last squad to qualify for the consolation race. They closed out the evening program with a 16th place finish to add two more points to their total.

Eats Bay was a perfect three-for-three in today's events in terms of notching top-16 finishes to score points towards the team standings.

Day three of NCAA Championships will be another eventful one for the Pioneers as they look to continue their momentum from impressive efforts in the first two days. Friday's schedule features the 500 Free, 100 Back, 100 Breast, 200 Fly, and 800 Free Relay.
