BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The first day of the 2016-17 NCAA Division II Swim Championships was highlighted by outstanding performances from Cal State East Bay and a new school record for
Morgan McClure.
The Pioneers competed in two events during Wednesday's program. When the action was complete, they totaled 29 points to put them in 12th place in the overall team standings.Â
McClure finished in 10th place in this morning's prelims for the 200 IM, just missing out on qualifying for the championship final. She was back in the pool in the evening and won the consolation final, breaking her own program record in the event. McClure's mark of 2:01.23 is a lifetime best in the 200 IM, and it was faster than the times of three swimmers in the championship finals.
CSUEB very nearly made it two school record in one day, but nonetheless had a strong showing in the only relay race of the day, the 200 Medley Relay. The Pioneers placed 14th in prelims, qualifying for the consolation finals as a top-16 team.
The Pioneers closed out a memorable first day of the NCAA meet with a dramatic victory in the consolation final to claim ninth place in the nation. East Bay finished in 1:43.32, out-touching Saginaw Valley by 0.04 seconds and falling just 0.12 seconds short of the school record. The foursome of
Mariam Lowe (26.37),
Claire Beaty (29.38),
Vivy Hua (24.61) and
Madison Hauanio (22.96) all turned in impressive splits, which bodes well for the team's chances in the coming days.
The NCAA Championships continue on Thursday with prelims starting at 8:30 a.m. and event finals at 4 p.m. The program for Day Two features the 200 Free Relay, 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, and 400 Medley Relay.
