MONTEREY PARK, Calif. -- The No. 21 Cal State East Bay swim team turned in another strong performance on Saturday at East Los Angeles College, finishing in third place at the 2016-17 Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PCSC) Championships with a total of 1068.5 points.
Morgan McClure provided the highlights of the day once again, as she set two more school records and took home a victory in the 100 IM, her third individual championships of the four-day meet.
No. 4 ranked defending champion UC San Diego captured both the men's and women's team championships. No. 9 Fresno Pacific placed second, approximately 150 points ahead of the Pioneers. East Bay beat nine schools in the 12-team field, including Division I programs Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount.
Senior
Kayleigh Davidson got things started for the Pioneers in the first swim event of the evening, and the longest of the championship meet. She swam the 1650 Free in 17:44.94 to notch 11th place.
Madison Chase was not far behind her in 17th place with a time of 18:15.72.
The next event was the 200 Back, although the finals of that race weren't quite as exciting as the prelims. Both McClure and
Mariam Lowe broke the previous school record in the morning prelims, and McClure's time of 2:00.76 will stand as the new program record. It's also among the top 10 times in the nation. In the finals, Lowe scored fourth place points for the Pioneers with a time of 2:02.27, and
Madison Hauanio tallied a sixth place finish in 2:06.45.
Miranda McDonnell (10th) and
Ryleigh Weight (14th) both scored for East Bay in the "B" Final.
Vivy Hua took sixth place to lead CSUEB in the 100 Free, completing the sprint in 52.38.
Shelby Parker represented the Pioneers in the "B" Final, taking 15th place in 53.54.
Junior
Claire Beaty fell about two seconds short of her own school record in the 200 Breast, but nonetheless scored big points with fourth place in the championship finals (2:17.26).
Yingfei Zhang and
Jensyn Breakfield both qualified for the "B" Final in that event, placing 12th and 15th, respectively.
Madison Faulkner turned in an outstanding effort to be the last qualifier in the championship final of the 200 Fly, and then she finished seventh in the evening with a time of 2:08.87.
Victoria Zukeran won the "B" Final for the Pioneers with a time of 2:08.36, nearly three seconds faster than she was in the prelims.
The final individual event of the meet was the 100 IM, in which McClure out-touched UCSD's Brooke Miles to claim her third PCSC event title. She finished the race in 57.21, breaking her own school record with a time that ranks No. 2 in the nation this season. The 100 IM was a big event for the Pioneers, as they qualified three swimmers in the championship final. Zhang took sixth place with a time of 1:00.92, and
Rita Gomez slotted behind her in seventh in 1:01.01.
The Pioneers closed out an impressive overall performance with a third place finish in the 400 Free Relay. The foursome of Hauanio, McClure, Hua, and Parker notched a time of 3:27.89, just behind UCSD and FPU.
CSUEB will now away the announcement of qualifiers for NCAA DII Championships, which take place Mar. 8-11 in Birmingham, Ala.
