SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The No. 21 ranked Cal State East Bay swim team returned to the pool after nearly a month off from competition on Saturday, taking on Division I squads San Diego and Northern Arizona in a double dual meet at the USD Sports Center.
The Pioneers were on the losing end of both scores, falling to the host Toreros 173-98, and coming up short against NAU by a final of 193-82. CSUEB now has a record of 3-4 this season in dual meets, with all four losses coming to Division I opponents.
East Bay started the afternoon with a fourth place finish in the 200 Medley, as the foursome of
Morgan McClure,
Claire Beaty,
Allie Klinger, and
Vivy Hua posted a time of 1:51.00. That was followed by the first and longest individual event of the day, the 1000 Freestyle. Freshman
Peyton Wayment gave the Pioneers an outstanding effort to lead the way, placing fourth overall in 10:47.99.Â
McClure turned in the first of three impressive performances to follow that up. The senior finished second in the 200 Freestyle, touching the wall in 1:54.34.
Freshman
Tatum Roepke led the way in the 100 Backstroke, out-touching teammate
Miranda McDonnell for fifth place as the pair notched times of 1:02.61 and 1:02.95, respectively.
Ryleigh Weight was less than a second behind in ninth place at 1:03.72.

Claire Beaty paced the Pioneers in the 100 Breaststroke, taking fourth place in 1:08.17. She was followed by
Yingfei Zhang in eighth (1:09.43) and
Rita Gomez in 10th (1:12.54).Â
Sophomore
Victoria Zukeran led a group of four East Bay swimmers in the 200 Butterfly, placing eighth overall. Her time of 2:13.55 was more than three seconds ahead of
Sofia Moufarrej, who finished ninth.
Vivy Hua scored fourth place points for CSUEB in the shortest event, the 50 Freestyle. She was nearly a second behind the winner with a time of 25.12, but nonetheless finished ahead of fourth Division I swimmers.Â
McClure followed that up by capturing East Bay's first event victory of the day, out-touching two NAU swimmers to take first place in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 52.93. Hua placed seventh in that race in 54.94, followed by
Serene Augustain in eighth (56.12).Â
Roepke and McDonnell fared similarly in the 200 Back as they did in the 100 Back. The former placed sixth to lead East Bay with a time of 2:14.47, and the latter followed closely in seventh in 2:15.83.Â
Beaty very nearly picked up the team's second victory of the day, finishing second in the 200 Breaststroke by less than four tenths of a second. She touched the wall in 2:25.75 for one of CSUEB's best performances of the day. Gomez took seventh in that race, followed by
Laurel Carpenter in ninth.
Augustain was East Bay's top finisher in the 500 Freestyle, taking eighth place in 5:18.22. Wayment scored 10th place points in that event, followed by fellow newcomer
Maddie Hulse in 11th.
Allie Klinger paced the Pioneers in the next event, the 100 Butterfly. The sophomore took seventh place in 1:01.11, ahead of Roepke in ninth,
Madison Faulkner in 10th, and
Elizabeth Cocker in 11th.
The final individual race of the day was a memorable one for the Pioneers, as McClure notched her second win. The All-American beat the rest of the filed by more than a full second to take first place in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:07.50.
East Bay closed out the meet with a strong showing in the 400 Freestyle Relay, as the quartet of Hua,
Kali Kearns,
Shelby Parker, and Beaty finished third with a time of 3:46.43. CSUEB's "B" team of Augustain, Cocker,
Abigail Mitchell, and
Jande Monteon was impressive as well, finishing in 3:49.13.
The Pioneers now have another long break and won't compete again until the calendar turns. The team will swim at Pioneer Pool for the first time this season in their next meet, when they welcome in two more Division I squads in San Jose State and Nevada on Friday, Jan. 12.
