SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay swim team closed out the A3 Performance Invitational on Saturday, taking fourth place out of eight teams at San Diego State's Aztec Aquaplex in a field that included the Division I Aztecs, as well as six of the top teams from the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PCSC).Â
It was another record-setting day for senior
Claire Beaty, who has already secured her second straight trip to NCAA Division II Championships. One day after lowering her own school record in the 100 Breaststroke, she did the same thing Saturday in the 200 Breaststroke -- twice.
Beaty broke her own school record during morning prelims, qualifying in first place with a time of 2:13.07. She lowered it again during the evening finals to pick up her second individual victory of the three-day meet. Beaty's finals time of 2:12.50 is also an NCAA "A" cut, automatically qualifying her for the national championship meet.
Beaty's performance this weekend was remarkable, but it shouldn't take away from a solid team effort as well. The first event of the day was the 200 Backstroke, which saw
Miranda McDonnell lead the way for the Pioneers. The junior qualified for the "B" final and placed 13th overall in 2:07.87.
That was followed by the longest race of the program, the 1650 Freestyle. Freshman Payton Wayment continued to represent East Bay well in the distance events in her rookie season. She finished 14th overall with a time of 17:41.20. Sophomore
Madison Chase also scored points for the Pioneers with a 22nd place finish.
Senior
Morgan McClure was close to another school record in the 100 Freestyle after qualifying seventh for the "A" final in morning prelims. She improved her time by nearly a second in the finals, touching the wall in 51.07 to place third. Sophomore newcomer
Allie Klinger qualified for the "B" final and scored points with an 11th place finish.
The next event was the 200 Breast, which saw Beaty out-pace the field by a full second. She was one of four Pioneer swimmers to score in this events.
Laurel Carpenter qualified for the "B" final and placed 16th, while
Rita Gomez too first place in the "C" final to finish 17th overall.
Jensyn Breakfield added to CSUEB's total as well with a 22nd place showing.Â
Senior
Madison Faulkner led the way for East Bay in the 200 Butterfly. She turned in a strong performance in the morning to qualify for the "B" final, then took 15th place overall in the evening heats.
Victoria Zukeran and
Elizabeth Cocker represented the Pioneers in the "C" final and scored points with 18th and 20th place finishes, respectively.
The Pioneers wrapped up their midseason meet by taking fifth place in the 400 Freestyle Relay. The CSUEB foursome of Klinger, McClure,
Shelby Parker, and
Kali Kearns topped Loyola Marymount, Azusa Pacific, and Pepperdine, but fell just a couple seconds short of conference rivals UC San Diego and Fresno Pacific.
Cal State East Bay returns to competition in four weeks with another trip to Southern California. The Pioneers travel to the University of San Diego on Dec. 16 for dual meets against DI squads Northern Arizona and USD.
