FRESNO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay swim meet was defeated by No. 11 Fresno Pacific in a dual meet at Sunnyside Aquatic Center on Friday afternoon by a final score of 172.5 to 111.5.
The Pioneers, who will see the talented Sunbirds again in just two short weeks at Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PCSC) Championships, drop their record to 6-6 in duals this season.Â
Senior
Madison Hauanio captured two individual victories, and junior
Morgan McClure notched three, but FPU won the other nine swim events, including both relays, and added 22 diving points to secure the head-to-head win.
The Sunbirds opened the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay, topping the Pioneer foursome of McClure,
Claire Beaty,
Vivy Hua, and Hauanio by less than two seconds. The home team also boasted the first place finisher in the longest race of the day, the 1000 Free. Seniors
Mariam Lowe (10:52.61) and
Kayleigh Davidson (10:55.60) both scores points for East Bay, finishing second and fourth, respectively.
Hauanio out-touched FPU's Laura Fornshell by four hundredths of a second for a narrow win in the 200 Free (1:53.68). McClure followed with a victory in the 100 Back (58.73). She and Lowe (58.91) finished 1-2 for the Pioneers, with McClure placing first by less than two tenths of a second.
Beaty took second place in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:07.75.
Jensyn Breakfield scored in that event as well, touching the wall in 1:10.99 for fourth place.
Victoria Zukeran led the way for East Bay in the 200 Fly, finishing runner-up in 2:09.26.
Madison Faulkner was right behind her in third place with a time of 2:13.99.
Vivy Hua was out-touched by FPU's Olivia Hynes in the 50 Free, settling for second place with a time of 24.75. The next sprint race, the 100 Free, saw a rare occurrence, as McClure and Fresno Pacific's Samantha Woo tied for first place with identical times of 52.80.
Shelby Parker placed fourth in that event to score points with a time of 54.44.
The 200 Back followed, which was the highest scoring event of the day for CSUEB. Hauanio won with a time of 2:06.83, followed by Lowe in second place in 2:07.99
Miranda McDonnell took fifth (2:16.23) to make it 14 points for the Pioneers.
Beaty notched another second place finish in the 200 Breast, touching the wall in 2:23.97.
Yingfei Zheng added fourth place points with a time of 2:31.02. Next up was the final distance event of the afternoon, the 500 Free, with Davidson (5:19.45),
Madison Chase (5:20.41), and
Kali Kearns (5:23.12) finishing third, fourth, and fifth.
Hua was East Bay's top scorer in the 100 Fly, taking second place in 58.12. Zukeran (58.83) and Faulkner (1:00.35) also scored for the visiting team with third and fifth place finishes.
McClure took home first place in the next event, the 400 IM, winning by a full second in 4:27.44. Teammate
Rita Gomez also scored points for the Pioneers with a fourth place finish (4:45.83).
The meet finished off with the 400 Free Relay, which was an extremely tight race. The Sunbirds ultimately win by a second, as Hua, Hauanio, Parker, and Zukeran finished in 3:34.77 for the runner-up Pioneers.
CSUEB gets right back in the pool on Saturday for the team's final dual meet of the 2016-17 season when they visit Fresno State at 12 p.m.Â
