HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay swim team notched a decisive dual meet victory Saturday morning over visiting Azusa Pacific, 127-75, on Senior Day at Pioneer Pool.Â
The meet was preceded by a ceremony to honor the four Pioneer seniors --
Kayleigh Davidson,
Madison Hauanio,
Mariam Lowe, and
Tiffany Wong -- who competed at home for the final time today.Â
With a victory over the conference rival Cougars, the Pioneers improve their record in dual meets to 6-5 this season, including a 6-1 mark against non-Division I teams. East Bay captured first place in 10 of the 11 events, with seniors Davidson, Hauanio, and Lowe each recording an individual victory.Â
The Pioneers opened the meet with a strong showing in the 200 Medley Relay, as CSUEB's "A" and "B" teams finished first and second. The foursome of Lowe,
Claire Beaty,
Victoria Zukeran, and
Shelby Parker was victorious with a time of 1:50.17.
Davidson bested the rest of the field in the 1000 Free by more than 13 seconds to dominate the morning's second event. She touched the wall in 10:58.05, with
Kali Kearns (11:11.44) and
Jande Monteon (11:26.22) scoring second and third place points, respectively.Â
APU picked up its lone win of the day in the 200 Free, as Rosalee Mira Santa Ana (1:56.10) topped
Vivy Hua in second (1:58.05), Parker in third (1:59.03), and
Ryleigh Weight in fourth (2:00.76).
Hauanio led the way for the Pioneers in the next event, the 50 Free. The Hawaii native out-sprinted the field with a time of 24.37.Â
East Bay followed that by boasting the top three finishers in the 200 IM.
Morgan McClure cruised to an eight-second victory in 2:06.08, with Zukeran taking second place (2:14.82) and Beaty finishing third (2:14.98).
Zukeran jumped right back in the pool and captured an individual victory in the next event, the 100 Fly. She finished in 58.61, out-touching Hua (58.71) by a tenth of a second.
Madison Faulkner (1:02.12) scored fourth place points for the Pioneers as well.
McClure picked up her second win of the morning in the 100 Free. Her time of 52.68 was two seconds better than Parker (54.83) in second place. Kearns placed fourth in that race in 56.13.Â
CSUEB got its second victory of the meet from Hauanio in the next event. She out-paced the rest of the field in the 100 Back by more than three seconds, finishing in 58.65.
Miranda McDonnell (1:02.06) scored second place points, followed by Weight (1:04.12) in third.Â
Lowe closed out her day on a high note with a five-second win in the 500 Free. She touched the wall in 5:15.12, with
Madison Chase taking third (5:20.41) and Davidson placing fifth (5:23.14).
The Pioneers had the top three swimmers in the final individual race of the meet, as Beaty (1:06.92),
Jensyn Breakfield (1:10.35), and Yingfei Zhang (1:12.19) led the way for the home team.Â
In the last race of the 2016-17 home schedule, East Bay's "A", "B", and "C" teams all topped APU in the 400 Free Relay. The quartet of Hauanio, Hua, Kearns, and McClure finished first with a time of 3:35.15.
Next up, the Pioneers travel to Fresno next weekend for duals on back-to-back days against Fresno Pacific and Fresno State. Those meets will be the final tuneup for CSUEB before the PCSC Championships, which begin Mar. 8 at East Los Angeles College.
