HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay swim team was defeated by Division I San Jose State 144-116 Friday in a tight dual meet on a beautiful afternoon at Pioneer Pool.
The Pioneers recorded victories in five of the 14 races, including one of the two relays. Their record in dual meets this season now sits at 5-5, with four of those five losses to DI squads.Â
The meet opened with the Spartans taking first place in the 200 Medley Relay, beating the CSUEB foursome of
Mariam Lowe,
Claire Beaty,
Vivy Hua, and
Morgan McClure by six seconds.
Madison Hauanio claimed a runner-up finish for East Bay in the second race, the 1000 Free, in 10:50.97. She was followed by fellow senior
Kayleigh Davidson in third (10:56.20).
McClure notched the first Pioneer victory of the day by out-pacing the rest of the field in the 200 Free with a time of 1:52.85. That event was followed by 100 Back, in which Lowe led the way for East Bay in second place (59.22).
Beaty was CSUEB's top finisher in the 100 Breast, taking second place in 1:07.42.
Jensyn Breakfield and
Rita Gomez also scored points in that event in fourth and fifth place.Â
In the next race, freshman
Victoria Zukeran won by nearly three seconds to score first place points in the 200 Fly. She touched the wall in 2:08.78, with
Madison Faulkner and
Elizabeth Cocker also scoring points in the event.Â
Vivy Hua was out-touched in the 50 Free, settling for second place in 24.66.
Shelby Parker took fifth in that event (25.35), and then led the Pioneers with a third-place finish in a tight 100 Free race (54.36).
McClure (2:06.02), Lowe (2:08.45), and
Miranda McDonnell followed that by finishing second, third, and fifth, respectively, to score points for East Bay in the 200 Back.
Beaty boasted the fourth individual victory of the day for the home team with a decisive win in the 200 Breast, touching the wall in 2:22.68. Breakfield and
Laurel Carpenter also picked up points for the Pioneers with fourth and fifth place finishes.Â
Davidson and
Kali Kearns posted nearly identical times in the next race, the 500 Free. That former took third place in 5:20.21, followed by the latter in fourth in 5:20.22.
Zukeran scored second place points in the 100 Fly, finishing in 58.08. Hua took fourth in that event (59.05), followed by
Yingfei Zheng in fifth (1:02.20).Â
McClure picked up her second win of the afternoon in the final individual race. She dominated the rest of the field by more than six second to take first in the 200 IM in 2:05.68. Hauanio finished fourth in the race (2:14.64) with Gomez fifth (2:18.37).
The Pioneers closed out the day by winning the last race, the 200 Free Relay. The quartet of Hua, Kearns, Parker, and Hauanio finished in 1:38.86, one second ahead of San Jose State.Â
East Bay returns to Pioneer Pool Saturday morning to celebrate the four Pioneer seniors prior to taking on conference rival Azusa Pacific in the last home dual meet of the 2016-17 season.Â
