LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The No. 18 ranked Cal State East Bay swim team was defeated by No. 6 UC San Diego on Friday in a hard-fought dual meet by a score of 148-109 at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
The Pioneers won six of the 14 events at the long-form meet, but it wasn't quite enough against the defending Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference champions in a matchup of teams that have finished first and second at PCSC Championships each of the last two seasons.
East Bay started the afternoon just over a second behind the Tritons in the 400 Medley Relay, as
Mariam Lowe,
Claire Beaty,
Vivy Hua, and
Madison Hauanio placed second in 4:38.85.
UCSD dominated the 800 Free with the top three finishers, as
Kayleigh Davidson (10:02.82) and
Ryleigh Weight (10:09.41) led the way for East Bay.Â
The Pioneers then picked up their first victory of the day in the third event.
Morgan McClure pulled away from the field by three seconds in the 200 Free, winning in 2:10.83.Â
Lowe paced CSUEB with a third-place finish in the next race, the 100 Back, touching the wall in 1:11.89. The Tritons placed the top two swimmers in the 200 Fly as well.
Madison Faulkner posted East Bay's top time in that event, taking third place in 2:36.77.
Those two races were sandwiched around the 100 Breast, which Beaty won narrowly. The junior out-touched UCSD's top breast-stroker by less than two-tenths of a second to take first with a time of 1:18.88.
Following the 200 Fly, the Pioneers bounced back to score first place points in back-to-back sprint races. Hua notched a time of 28.09 to claim a victory in the 500 Free. Hauanio then finished first in the following event, the 100 Free, in 1:00.88.Â
McClure then took second place in the 200 Back (2:28.62), followed by Lowe in third (3:32.65). The Tritons made it two straight wins in the next event, as Lily Maxfield topped Beaty in second place to win the 200 Breast. Beaty posted a time of 2:50.40.
UCSD stretched out its points lead in the next two races, scoring the top four swimmers in the 400 Free and the top three in the 100 Fly. The Pioneers then scored first place points in the final two races. McClure led the way in the 200 IM with a time of 2:25.26. The 200 Free Relay team of Hauanio, Hua,
Yingfei Zheng, and McClure closed out the day with a time of 1:53.22.
The Pioneers now have a record of 5-4 in duals this season. They will take a break from competition for the holidays, then return to the pool in four week when they host San Jose State on Friday, Jan. 13.Â
