HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay swim team battled rain and heavy winds on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Pool, but they overcame the weather to notch a 140-84 dual meet victory over Colorado College.Â
The Pioneer women took first place in all nine individual races and both relays to pick up their fifth dual win of the season. They started the day off on a high note with a dominating victory in the 400 Medley Relay. The foursome of
Morgan McClure,
Claire Beaty,
Vivy Hua, and
Madison Hauanio notched a season-best time of 3:57.07, which ranks 16th in the nation in Division II.
McClure turned in another highlight for East Bay with a season-best time to win the 100 Free. She touched the wall in 52.38, good for 15th in the country and just missing an NCAA "B" cut by less than three-tenths of a second.
The 100 Free was a strong race for the Pioneers, as they boasted the top five finishers.
Abigail Mitchell (55.46) and
Noelle Farrar (55.84) scored points in second and third place, followed by
Shelby Parker (56.31) and
Madison Chase (57.78) in fourth and fifth.
The second event of the afternoon was the longest race, the 1000 Free. Senior
Mariam Lowe posted a decisive victory in 10:44.73, with Kayleigh Davison taking second (10:55.32),
Miranda McDonnell in third (11:11.13), and Chase in fourth (11:13.77). Lowe also secured a win in the 100 Back with a time of 1:00.23, just ahead of teammates
Ryleigh Weight (1:02.65) and
McKenna Stevulak (1:04.88). Â
"Today was a perfect day to work on skills and improve on race strategies," said head coach
Shane Pelton. "I was particularly impressed with Mariam's 1000 Free, as she has had a hard time with a ride-and-die type strategy, but today she put together a great, smart race. That also goes for
Madison Chase, who has improved every 1000 she has swam."
Weight took first place in the 200 Free (1:59.57) ahead of
Jande Monteon in second (2:02.01).
Vivy Hua followed with a victory in the 50 Free by more than a full second in 24.85.
Hauanio dominated her only individual event of the day, the 200 IM, falling just short of a season best time (2:10.19).
Rita Gomez took second in that race (2:17.42), followed by
Laurel Carpenter in third (2:18.98).Â
Freshman
Victoria Zukeran was the only swimmer under one minute in the 100 Fly, taking first place in 59.69. The Pioneers had the top five finishers in that event as well, with McDonnell in second (1:01.72),
Elizabeth Cocker in third (1:02.76),
Madison Faulkner in fourth (1:03.23), and
Tiffany Wong in fifth (1:03.68).
Beaty notched a season best in the 100 Breast, cruising to a victory in 1:07.52, just three seconds off her own school record.
Jensyn Breakfield placed second in that race (1:12.02), followed by Gomez in third (1:14.25).
"Claire applied some skills with her pullouts and breakouts that we have been working on in her breaststroke, and they looked really good today," Pelton added.
Davidson picked up a win in the second distance event, the 500 Free, touching the wall in 5:19.71, just ahead of Zukeran in second place (5:20.41). East Bay closed out the meet with Hauanio, McClure, Hua, and Parker taking first place by nearly six seconds in the 200 Free Relay (1:39.40).
"I was impressed overall with the way the team swam," Pelton noted. "It's never easy to get up and race when the conditions aren't ideal. It's a testament to the work ethic and toughness of these women. We have been working on that all season and it showed today with some season best times. I am excited to see what they can put together at our midseason Invitational in two weeks."
The Pioneers compete next down in Southern California at the Winter Invitational, hosted by La Verne University Dec. 2-4 at East Los Angeles College, the site of the 2016-17 PCSC Championships in February.
