OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's swim team opened an extremely busy weekend of competition on Friday afternoon by taking on Mills College, Biola University, and College of Idaho in a four-way duel meet hosted by Mills.Â
The Pioneers were out-touched by Biola and took second in the first race of the day, the 200 Medley Relay. After that, East Bay dominated the remainder of the women's program, picking up duel wins against all three opponents.Â
"The first day of a long weekend is in the books and I feel that we executed well today," said head coach
Shane Pelton. "We had good swims from a number of different people, and I'm happy with the way we competed."
Junior
Morgan McClure, who was selected as the Division II National Swimmer of the Week following the first meet of the season, once again excelled. She won both her individual races, notching runaway victories in both the 200 Freestyle (1:54.68) and the 100 Butterfly (58.13), with teammates
Madison Faulkner and
Rita Gomez taking second and third in the 100 Fly. McClure also led off the 400 Free Relay and posted the fastest cut of the day at 52.39.
"Morgan was outstanding in all three of her races," noted Pelton. "She had top-10 times nationally in both her individual races, and the No. 3 ranked time in Division II to lead off the 400 Free Relay."
Kayleigh Davidson posted a victory in the 1000 Freestyle as the Pioneers occupied the top four spots in the longest race of the afternoon. She easily out-paced the field with a time of 10:54.99.Â
Madison Hauanio took home first place in the other distance event, the 500 Freestyle, with a time of 5:13.30. The senior bested Davidson and
Ryleigh Weight as East Bay finished 1-2-3 in the event. Hauanio was out-touched in the 200 IM, taking second place by six-tenths in 2:09.87. She also contributed to CSUEB's first place 400 Free Relay squad.
Junior
Claire Beaty took first place in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:08.43, beating the next closest swimmer by more than three seconds. Senior
Mariam Lowe notched a victory for the Pioneers as well, out-pacing the field in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 59.58.
Vivy Hua led the Pioneers in the 50 Freestyle, taking second place in 24.92. Hua also finished second in the 100 Freestyle (53.97), just ahead of teammates
Victoria Zukeran (55.88),
Abigail Mitchell (55.90), and
Annalena Assaiante (56.49), who finished third, fourth, and fifth.
The Pioneers have a short time to rest before getting back in the pool at Mills College Saturday morning for the annual Bay Area Invitational, scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
"Tomorrow will be a big test, both mentally and physically," Pelton surmised. "I am going to challenge the team with a lot of racing, and put them in some events they may not be accustomed to swimming. I'm really intrigued to see how they respond, it should be a great day!"
