HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's swim team wrapped up the regular season with a decisive 170-91 victory over Fresno Pacific on Friday afternoon in the final dual meet of 2015-16.Â
Swimmers from both teams dodged rain drops at times and battled chilly, windy conditions throughout the day, but it didn't damper any of East Bay's enthusiasm for their final home event of the year. The meet was preceded by an emotional "Senior Day" ceremony to celebrate the careers of the nine CSUEB seniors who swam competitively in Pioneer Pool for the last time:
Arolyn Basham,
Hannah Cutts,
Kameron Isaacs,
Alyssa Littlefield,
Vivianne Mai,
Makila Schuck,
Rachel Shimizu,
Jacqueline Whitehead, and
Tana Wilson.Â
"The team brought tremendous energy for Senior Day this afternoon," said head coach
Ben Loorz. "We had a great crowd, and we had some really impressive times considering the weather conditions."
The Pioneers took home first-place finishes in seven individual events on Friday, as well as both relays. Cutts and junior
Mariam Lowe led the way with two victories apiece.
Cutts posted a solid in the 200 freestyle, clearing the field by two seconds in 1:56.35. She came back later in the meet and dominated the 500 freestyle by nearly seven seconds with a time of 5:22.25
Shimizu, a fellow distance swimmer, closed out her career in Pioneer Pool with an excellent time of 17:46.12 to claim a victory in the 1650 freestyle.Â
Lowe, meanwhile, took care of business for the Pioneers in the backstroke. She out-touched teammate
Madison Hauanio by four tenths of a second in the 100 backstroke (59.46), and later took home first place in the 200 back with a time of 2:09.11.
Schuck's also turned in a memorable performance on Senior Day, nabbing a narrow victory in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.19. She also swam the breast leg for CSUEB's 200 medley relay team. Along with Lowe,
Vivy Hua, and Littlefield, the Pioneers secured a dramatic victory over FPU with two hundredths of the a second (1:49.30).
Hauanio posted runner-up finishes in both the 100 backstroke and the 400 individual medley, but she also boasted two victories in the wet weather. The junior took first place in the 100 freestyle with a strong time of 52.42. She also anchored a decisive win for the 400 freestyle relay team, which also featured Littlefield, Cutts, and
Cassidy Humphrey and finished in 3:36.59.
East Bay also has several incredible tight second-place finishes. Hua came up just 12 hundredths of a second short in the 100 butterfly, taking second place in 59.34.
Claire Beaty was also narrowly out-touched in the 200 breaststroke, finishing runner-up by half a second (2:27.78).Â
Basham placed second in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall in 2:13.03. And Littlefield had the closest possible second place finish, clocking in hundredth of a second behind FPU's Sammie Woo in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.33.
"Our depth really showed today, and we had some outstanding results from our backstrokers and breaststrokers," Loorz added. "This was a great way to send off our seniors in their last meet here in our pool."
The Pioneers now have about three weeks to train and taper for the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PCSC) Championships, which are scheduled for Feb. 12-15 at East Los Angeles College.Â
