LA MIRADA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay swim team recorded impressive dual victories over Azusa Pacific, Biola, and Concordia-Irvine on Saturday during a four-team meet at the Splash Regional Aquatic Center.
Out of 16 events, the Pioneers notched nine individual victories and two first-place relay finishes.
Madison Hauanio led the way with three wins, while fellow junior
Mariam Lowe and freshman
Vivy Hua posted two each.
"I was pleased with the way we competed across the board," said head coach
Ben Loorz. "We displayed a lot of depth right off the bat in our 200 medley relay, and that really set the tone for the meet. The expectations are quite high as we enter this final stretch toward Conference, and the team is demonstrating good focus."
Hauanio, the reigning Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PSCS) Swimmer of the Week, dominated the field in the 400 individual medley. She touched the wall in 4:33.22, nearly nine seconds ahead of the second place swimmer and just 1.32 seconds off the school record. The Hawaii native also captured victories in the 50 freestyle (24.52) and the 200 freestyle (1:54.44).Â
Not to be outdone, Lowe claimed decisive victories in both backstroke races. She beat out teammate
Morgan McClure in the 100 back with a time of 59.53. In the 200 back, the event in which she holds the program record, Lowe clocked in at 2:08.19 to win by almost four seconds.Â
Hua continued her strong freshman campaign, out-pacing the field in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.36. She also earned a victory in the 100 freestyle, out-touching McClure for first place in 53.96. Hua was the third-place swimmer in a tight 50 freestyle race, finishing just behind Hauanio and junior
Clarisse Aguilar in 24.83.
Makila Schuck was impressive in the 100 breaststroke, claiming a victory in 1:07.86. Teammate
Claire Beaty had the narrowest possible runner-up finish in the 200 breast, fall short of first place by three hundredths of a second in 2:27.59.
Senior
Rachel Shimizu paced the Pioneers in the distance events. She took first place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:11.08, edging out Cutts in second place by two seconds. Shimizu also swam the longest event of the day, the 1000 freestyle, in 10:42.19, which was good fora runner-up finish.Â
East Bay's 200 medley relay team of McClure, Schuck, Hua, and Cutts notched a victory, narrowly out-touching the squad's "B" foursome with a time of 1:50.49. The 400 freestyle relay was not nearly as close, as Shimizu, Cutts,
Kali Kearns, and Hauanio finished in 3:38.23 for a five-second victory.
Next up, the Pioneers are back at home for the lone home meet of the season against Fresno Pacific on Friday, Jan. 22. The dual will be preceded by a ceremony to honor CSUEB's nine seniors competing in Pioneer Pool for the last time.
