Box Score 2 HAYWARD, Calif. -- Cal State East Bay seniors
Sean Becker and
Ben O'Bryan both fired complete games to lead Pioneer baseball to a pair of victories over San Francisco State in the final home games of the 2014 season. East Bay won by scores of 4-1 and 8-2 to improve their record to 30-17 overall and 24-15 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.
The Pioneers have now won seven straight games and 11 of their last 12. They reached 30 victories for the second straight season and set a new single-season program record for CCAA wins (topping last year's record of 22-18).
East Bay held its annual Senior Day ceremony between games of the doubleheader to honor the careers of the 13 student-athletes who competed on Pioneer Field for the final time today.
CSUEB and SF State will play their regular season finale on Sunday, May 4 at 12 p.m. in San Francisco.
Game 1 -- CSUEB 4, SF State 1The first game of the day was an outstanding pitcher's dual between Becker and SF State's Preston Tarter. Both right-handers breezed through the first three innings before the offenses were able to break through. In the top of the fourth, the Gators put their leadoff runner on with an infield single, moved him over with a bunt, and brought him home with back-to-back ground outs.
In the bottom of the frame, Ryan Kochan got East Bay's first hit of the game with a one-out single, and Daniel Carney followed with a double down the third base line.
Chris Porter then tied the game with an RBI ground out.
The score remained 1-1 into the bottom of the eighth, when the Pioneers finally managed to hang a crooked number on the board against Tarter. Kelly Starnes led off with a walk, and Marcus Wise was hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt, the Gators intentionally walked
Brandon Alexander to load the bases. Kochan made them pay, roping a 3-1 pitch into the left field corner for a two-run double. Carney followed with a line drive single to center to drive home the fourth Pioneer run.
Becker set down the Gators in the ninth to finish off his fifth complete game of the season -- and the 11th of his career. The senior scattered five hits and didn't issue a walk in his final home start to earn his seventh victory of the year. Becker now has a 15-6 record as a Pioneer. He leads the CCAA with 94 innings this season and has walked just nine batters.
The Pioneers and Gators each had five hits in the game. For the home team, they all came from Carney, who went 3-for-4, and Kochan, who finished 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs, and two RBI. Wise reached base twice, and Starnes notched a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored.
Longtime Pioneer Sports Information Director Marty Valdez threw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the first game, which was his last home Athletic event before retiring this summer. Click here to see video of

Game 2 -- CSUEB 8, SF State 2O'Bryan had impressive stuff on display in the second game, as he held SF State to just two hits over seven innings. The Pioneer offense helped out by staking him to an early lead.
In the bottom of the first, Starnes beat out an infield single and stole second to start the inning. Ellis Stephney followed with an opposite-field base hit, and then Jason Fletcher brought home the first run of the game with a grounder. Two batters later, Kochan shot an RBI single through the hole. Carney then finished off the scoring rally with a sacrifice fly.
East Bay put up two more runs the very next inning.
Marcus Williams reached on an error to lead things off, and then Starnes and Stephney laced back-to-back doubles to make the score 5-0.
After Carney singled and
Tyler Buchanan doubled with one out in the third, the Pioneers got their sixth run when
Zac Chuvala's grounder squeeked past the first baseman.
SF State finally got its first hit -- and first run -- against O'Bryan in the fourth. After a pair of walks, Carter Loud lined an RBI single, but O'Bryan retired the next three to escape further damage. The Gators picked up their second run in the sixth, taking advantage of a passed ball and then a wild pitch.
Eats Bay scored twice more in the bottom of the sixth. Chuvala tripled to left-center, and Starnes followed with a base hit to left. He then stole second, moved up to third on a ground out, and scored the final Pioneer run on Fletcher's sacrifice fly.
O'Bryan gave up just one earned run and struck out eight in his conference-leading sixth complete game of the season. In his 30th and final regular season start at Cal State East Bay, O'Bryan recorded his 146th career punchout, moving him into eighth place on the school's all-time strikeout list. He improved his record to 5-4 with a team-best 2.31 ERA this season.
The Pioneers racked up 11 hits in the second game, including three apiece from Starnes and Stephney at the top of the lineup. Starnes finished with three runs scored and two RBI, and both outfielders stole two bases. Kochan was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a steal. Carney added another hit to finish the doubleheader 4-for-6.
