Pioneers Complete Four-Game Sweep of Golden Eagles

4/27/2014 7:45:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team picked up a pair of victories over visiting Cal State L.A. in Sunday's doubleheader to complete a four-game sweep of the Golden Eagles. The Pioneers have won 12 of their last 14 games, improving to 27-17 overall and 21-15 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.

Michael Pope tossed his first complete game of the season to lead East Bay to a 4-2 win in the morning game. In the afternoon, the home team needed extra innings to decide the finale, ultimately winning 4-3 on a walk-off double by Tyler Buchanan. Despite CSUEB's victories, Cal Poly Pomona clinched the fourth and final spot in the CCAA tournament with a win over Chico State, eliminating the fifth-place Pioneers from contention for the conference championship.

Game 1 -- CSUEB 4, CSULA 2

East Bay out-hit its opponents 9 to 3 in the first game as Pope turned in one of his best performances of the season. They got on the scoreboard first, scoring all the runs they would need in the bottom of the second inning. Singles by Ryan Kochan and Daniel Carney and a walk to Chris Porter loaded the bases with one out. Zac Chuvala then knocked in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly, which advanced all the runners. Kelly Starnes followed with a line drive single up the middle to plate two more runs.

Cal State L.A. got a run back in the third, but two frames later, the Pioneers answered back. Jason Fletcher yanked a one-out double off the wall in the left field corner, just missing a home run. Two batters later, Marcus Williams drove one over the left fielder's head for an RBI double.

The Golden Eagles scored their second run in the sixth inning, but they couldn't mount any late-game rallies agianst Pope, who retired the last nine batters to close out the game. The junior earned his fourth victory of the season, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out two in nine innings.

Eight Pioneers had a hit in the game, but Williams was the only batter with multiple knocks, finishing 2-for-2. Porter reached base twice on a pair of walks. Wise and Kochan each had a hit and a stolen base.

Game 2 -- CSUEB 4, CSULA 3 (8 innings)

Although it was the last game of the series, Sunday afternoon's contest featured a tremendous pitching matchup between L.A.'s Brandon Quintero and East Bay's Ben O'Bryan, who rank first and fourth in the CCAA in strikeouts, respectively.

The Golden Eagles scored a run in the first, but the Pioneers came right back with two in the bottom of the inning. Starnes reached second base on an error by the shortstop to start things off, and then Ellis Stephney and Kochan laced RBI singles to put CSUEB up 2-1.

The following inning, East Bay loaded the bases when Williams walked, Chuvala singled, and Starnes was hit by a pitch. Stephney then lifted a sacrifice fly into center to knock in the third Pioneer run.

Cal State L.A. kept fighting, however, and mounted a two-out rally in the fourth to cut their deficit to 3-2. After two scoreless frames, East Bay was one out away from victory in the bottom of the seventh, but the Golden Eagles managed to tie the game against O'Bryan and force extra innings.

Brian Bynum relieved the East Bay starter with one out in the eighth and retired the only two batters he faced. Bynum notched his first victory of the season when the Pioneers won the game in the bottom of the inning. Kochan lined a single into left, and then with two outs, Buchanan brought him home with a hooking line drive that landed right on the left-field foul line for a game-winning hit.

O'Bryan ended up allowing two earned run on seven hits, and he struck out seven batters in 7.1 innings. Kochan finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Stephney knocked in two runs and also stole a bag for the Pioneers, who racked up nine hits as a team.

East Bay concludes the 2014 regular season next weekend against San Francisco State with a four-game series, which opens in the city on Friday, May 2.
