Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. -- Senior right-hander
Nick Hudson tossed eight innings to lead the Cal State East Bay baseball team to a 6-4 win over visiting Hawaii Pacific on Thursday afternoon. The Pioneers (7-6) snap their three-game losing streak, while handing the Sea Warriors (8-2) only their second defeat of the season.
Hudson (3-1) scattered eight hits and allowed one earned run in his eight innings of work. The Benicia native struck out four and didn't walk a batter en route to his third victory of 2014. He came out of the game with a 6-1 lead in the top of the ninth. HPU made it interesting against reliever
Michael Pope in the final frame, but the junior was able to escape a jam to secure the win.Â
"This was big for us to get one in the win column against a good team," said head coach
Bob Ralston. "Hudson gave us a great effort, and it was good to see Alexander come up with a couple huge hits."
The Pioneers struck first in the bottom of the third inning. A bunt single by Kelly Starnes and a hit batter put two runners on with two outs for the middle of the East Bay lineup. Jason Fletcher then shot a double into the left field corner to plate the first run.
Brandon Alexander followed by lining a single into right field to make it 2-0 Pioneers.
HPU answered back in the fourth to cut the lead in half. Derek Nakasato led off with a triple and eventually scored in a sacrifice fly. That was the only rally the Sea Warriors were able to mount against Hudson, however.
The Pioneers picked up the rest of their runs when they put four on the board in the fifth inning. Starnes led off with a walk, and Ryan Kochan followed with a single. After a sacrifice bunt by
Zac Chuvala, Alexander cranked a double into the left-center gap to bring home both runners. After a base hit by Daniel Carney, Ellis Stephney laced a line drive past first base to plate Alexander. East Bay made it 6-1 when
Tyler Buchanan beat out a grounder in the hole to shortstop, allowing Carney to come home.Â
HPU out-hit the Pioneers 12 to 8 for the game, although the Sea Warriors issued three walks and the Pioneers didn't walk anyone. Alexander finished 2-for-3 with a base on balls and three RBI. Stephney and Starnes each reached base twice on a hit and a walk. Kochan scored a pair of runs out the leadoff spot.
East Bay and Hawaii Pacific are scheduled to play three more games over the next two days. Rain is in the forecast for Friday, but the teams will attempt to start a 11 a.m., weather permitting. Check
