Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay baseball team split its doubleheader at Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday. The Pioneers (5-2, 2-1 CCAA) suffered their first road defeat of the year as the Coyotes (1-7, 1-2 CCAA) earned a 7-4 victory in the first game, but East Bay bounced back to capture the second game, 6-2 behind
Nick Hudson's complete game.
GAME 1: CSUSB 7, CSUEB 4
The Pioneers out-hit San Bernardino 10 to 5 in game one, but they issued the Coyotes 10 free passes in the form of eight walks and two hit batters. The home team got on the board in the first inning with three runs against East Bay starter
Ben O'Bryan. CSUSB notched two doubles and two walks to plate a pair of runs before an outfield error made it 3-0.
The Pioneers answered back in the third inning as they scored their only runs of the day against Coyote hurler Ruben Rios. Four straight singles and a walk produced two runs as Kelly Starnes and
Brandon Alexander picked up an RBI each.
San Bernardino scored two more runs in the fourth to make the score 5-2 and chase O'Bryan from the game. The right-hander allowed four earned runs on four hits in 3.1 innings before giving way to junior Bryan Webster. Webster finished the fourth and tossed a scoreless fifth before running into trouble in the sixth. The Coyotes loaded the bases with two outs on a hit and two walks and plated a pair of runs on an infield error by the Pioneers.
East Bay was able to cut into its 7-2 deficit with a couple of runs in the seventh inning as Starnes drove in
Marcus Williams with a single, and Alexander knocked in Starnes with a double. Unfortunately, 7-4 was as close as the Pioneers would get as the Coyotes closed out the victory in the final two innings.
Webster lasted 2.2 innings, and
Taylor Kruger pitched the final two frames. The pair combined to allow one hit and zero earned runs while striking out five.
Starnes and Alexander each finished with three hits and two RBI in the game, and
David Elzig notched a base hit in his first start of the season. O'Bryan took the loss, dropping his record to 0-1.
GAME 2: CSUEB 6, CSUSB 2
The Pioneers came back to pick up a huge win in the second game of the doubleheader, riding a strong performance by their starting pitcher. East Bay scored first and kept the pressure on throughout the seven-inning contest, plating funs in four different innings.
They loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first inning, and even though they didn't get another hit in the frame, back-to-back RBI ground outs gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. The bottom of the inning was a bit of deja vu, as the Coyotes also put three runners on base before there were any outs. They scored their runs on consecutive sacrifice flies instead of grounders, but the damage was the same, and the score was tied 2-2 after one.
Elzig gave East Bay a 3-2 advantage with a run-scoring single in the third inning, and as it turned out, that would be enough for Hudson. The Pioneers tacked on two more runs in the fifth thanks to singles by Alexander and Daniel Carney, a sac fly by
Tyler Buchanan, and an infield error by the Coyotes. Carney also drove in the team's sixth run with a base hit up the middle to plate Ellis Stephney in the sixth.
Hudson improved to 2-0 on the season with a complete game effort. He struck out four and scattered five hits, holding CSUSB scoreless over the final six innings as the Pioneers took control of the game.
Carney and Alexander both went 2-for-4 in the win, while Elzig, Buchanan, Marcus Wise, and
Eren Miravalles all posted a hit and an RBI for the Pioneers.
The series concludes with an 11 a.m. game on Sunday as Cal State East Bay looks to win three out of four to open CCAA play. Junior
Michael Pope is the expected starting pitcher for the Pioneers.
