Pioneers Shut Out 3-0 by Gators on Senior Day

4/28/2013 5:50:00 PM

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. — The Pioneer baseball team came up short in its attempt at a four-game sweep of San Francisco State on Sunday. Cal State East Bay (30-16, 20-16 CCAA) lost to the visiting Gators (26-32, 17-23 CCAA) by a score of 3-0 in the final home game of 2013.

East Bay fell victim to a one-hit shutout from SFSU pitcher Nolan Sheridan (6-1). With three wins in the series, the Pioneers finish the season 23-6 at home.

Sunday was also Senior Day at Pioneer Field. A brief ceremony was held to honor the 10 seniors on this year's team and their families. David Castillo, Matt Fontaine, Nick Goulet, Bryson Nakamura, Andrew Rodriguez, Charlie Sharrer, Kenny Uyetake, Jordan Wilder, Zacahry Wong, and Kyle Zozaya all played their final home game for CSUEB baseball today.

Unfortunately, there wasn't much for East Bay fans to celebrate once the game got started. Pioneer starter Nick Hudson gave them a quality outing, but the home team simply couldn't get anything going on offense.

The Gators took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Justin Lamb. Carter Loud singled home another run in the sixth to make it 2-0, and then SFSU got its final run the following inning on a base hit by Dillon Meyer.

Hudson (2-2) lasted seven innings and allowed three earned runs. The right-hander struck out five and didn't walk a batter before handing the ball over to Sharrer for the last two frames. The senior pitched two hitless innings in relief, picking up two strikeouts.

Zac Chuvala got the only hit for the Pioneers in the third inning, and it was a close one. The shortstop beat out the throw on a bouncing ball into the hole between short and third.

Brandon Alexander reached base twice with a pair of walks. Wilder also drew a walk, and Castillo was hit by a pitch.

With four games remaining, Cal State East Bay is guaranteed to finish at least .500 in CCAA play for the first time in program history. The Pioneers finish their regular season schedule next weekend when they travel south to take on Cal Poly Pomona.
