LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay swimming team dropped a pair of dual meets to UC San Diego and Grand Canyon on Saturday afternoon in Southern California. Competing for the first time since Dec. 17, the Pioneers found success individually but could not overcome strong showings from both the third-ranked Tritons and sixth-ranked Antelopes.
Senior
Jenel Lopez led East Bay with a pair of third-place finishes in both the 100 and 200 freestyle. In the 100, Lopez posted a time of 53.66, coming in less than a second back of the first- and second-place finishers from UC San Diego and Grand Canyon. In the 200, Lopez beat out the fourth place finisher by nearly two seconds. Lopez helped guide the 400 free relay team that also included
Caitlin DeNise,
Hannah Cutts and
Karly Wasung to a second place showing.
Rachel Knowles and
Alyssa Tenney also found success for the Pioneers, with Knowles finishing fourth in the 200 breaststroke, just ahead of teammates
Courtney Schwiesow and
Makila Schuck. Knowles also took eighth in the 400 IM, finishing four seconds back of teammate Tenney, who placed sixth in 4:44.19 to take one-hundredth of a second off her school record from last year. Tenney also snagged a fourth-place finish in the 200 backstroke and led off the Pioneers' fifth-place 400 medley relay team that also featured Knowles, DeNise and
Kameron Isaacs.
Rachel Shimizu led East Bay in the distance events, finishing sixth in both the 1000 and 500 freestyle, coming in just ahead of Cutts in the 500. DeNise added a sixth place finish in the 50 free for the Pioneers in a race that saw the top six finishers separated by just half a second.
The Pioneers return to action on Friday, Jan. 11, when they travel to Fresno Pacific to meet the Sunbirds in dual meet action. The meet is set to get underway at 3 p.m.
