FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Cal State East Bay swimming team posted its fourth consecutive meet victory with a 108-96 win over Alaska Fairbanks on the road on Friday night. The Pioneers relied on five individual victories, including a pair of one-two finishes, to secure the win in the first of two dual meets with the Nanooks this weekend.
Alyssa Tenney led the Pioneers with a pair of individual victories in 200 IM and the 100 backstroke. Tenney out-touched Fairbanks' Danielle Lyons in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:14.24 to beat Lyons by just .08 seconds. Later in the meet, the sophomore beat out teammate
Bethany Hoopman to give the Pioneers a one-two finish in the 100 back.
For the second straight week,
Rachel Shimizu claimed the 1000 freestyle victory, out-pacing the Nanooks' Lauren Bailey by three seconds.
Caitlin DeNise and
Courtney Schwiesow joined Shimizu and Tenney as individual winners. DeNise edged Fairbanks' Margot Adams by three-tenths of a second in the 50 free, while Schwiesow took the 100 breaststroke and gave East Bay its second one-two finish of the day with a half-second win over
Makila Schuck.
Hannah Cutts helped the Pioneers claim six second-place finishes, topping Shimizu. Cutts added a third-place showing in the 200 free, finishing two seconds back of teammate
Karly Wasung.
Though the Nanooks claimed both relays, the Pioneer contingent of
Jenel Lopez,
Karly Wasung,
Bethany Hoopman and
Caitlin DeNise finished just a half-second behind Fairbanks' team in the 200 free relay to cap the meet.
The Pioneers and Nanooks are set to meet again on Saturday afternoon in Fairbanks. The meet is set to get underway at 1 p.m. PST with live video available
