RENO, Nev. - The Cal State East Bay swimming team took first in three races and posted seven second-place finishes in an eventual 160-99 dual meet loss at the hands of Nevada in Reno on Friday afternoon. The Pioneers ended a five-meet winning streak but saw
Jenel Lopez and
Caitlin DeNise combine to score 31 points against their Division I opponent.
Lopez led the way for East Bay, taking both the 200 and 100 freestyle. In the 200, Lopez beat out Nevada's Luiza Vieira by less than a tenth of a second. Meanwhile in the 100 Lopez out-touched Vieira again, this time by seven-tenths of a second. Lopez also carded a runner-up finish in the 50 free, coming in behind DeNise, who touched the wall in 24.76. DeNise also added a second-place finish of her own in the 100 butterfly, finishing just over a second behind the Wolfpack's Mengjiao Mi.
The Pioneers also got runner-up performances from
Hannah Cutts and
Alyssa Tenney, who both carded a pair of second place finishes each. Cutts claimed second in the distance races, finishing just two seconds out of first in the 500 free and also grabbing second in the 1000 free. Meanwhile, Tenney swept second place in the backstroke events, finishing just two seconds back of Nevada swimmers in both the 100 and 200.
Rachel Shimizu added a third-place finish in the 1000 free and the 200 breast while
Courtney Schwiesow grabbed third in the 100 breast and
Bethany Hoopman finished third behind Tenney in the 200 backstroke. The Pioneers also claimed third in the 400 free relay, posting a time of 3:39.71 to finish one second back of Nevada's relay teams which were swimming exhibition for the last race of the day.
Cal State East Bay will be back in action in two weeks when it travels to the UNLV Invite on Dec. 15-17.
