RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay swim team claimed victories in eight races to top both Cal Baptist and Redlands in a double dual meet in Riverside on Saturday. The Pioneers notched their third meet victory in as many chances with a 148.5-125.5 win over the Lancers and a 160-109 victory against the Bulldogs.
East Bay posted one-two finishes in five of the eight races it won on Saturday and had at least one swimmer in the top three in all but one race at the meet. The Pioneers dominated the freestyle and backstroke events, claiming victory in seven of the eight races, including a sweep by
Alyssa Tenney in the 100 and 200 back.
Tenney opened the meet with a win in the 100 back topping teammate
Bethany Hoopman by two seconds in the first of the Pioneers' five one-two finishes. Later in the meet Tenney topped teammate
Caitlin DeNise by two seconds in the 200 IM and capped the day with a four-second win in the 200 back.
Joining Tenney with a pair of impressive performances was
Rachel Shimizu, who swept the distance freestyle events, claiming a 14 second victory over
Hannah Cutts in the 1000 before beating her out again in the 500 later in the meet.
Cutts rounded out a hat-trick of runner up finishes with a second-place showing in the 200 free, finishing just two seconds behind
Karly Wasung. Coming off an injury,
Jenel Lopez got back into form to claim a four-hundreths of a second victory in the 100 free, finishing third in the 50 free and helping the 400 free relay take first.
The Pioneers also took second, third and fourth in the 100 breastroke as
Courtney Schwiesow finished just .36 seconds off Cal Baptist's Molly Larson and was followed by
Makila Schuck and
Rachel Knowles.
Shimizu, Lopez, Wasung and DeNise teamed up to finish the meet with an eight-second win over Redlands in the 400 free relay.
Cal State East Bay returns to action next week when it travels to Alaska Fairbanks in dual-meet action. The Pioneers and Nanooks are set to open the meet on Nov. 9 and 10.
