HAYWARD, Calif. – The Pioneer baseball received good pitching performances in a doubleheader split with Cal State Dominguez Hills on April 9.
Hurler
Brandyn Bell won his second straight decision as the Pioneers won game two of the doubleheader 9-5. Cal State Dominguez Hills took the first game by the score of 4-1.
Bell, now 3-2 for the season, allowed three earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts in 5.1 innings. He allowed only one hit and recorded five strikeouts in the first four innings.
Leading 1-0, the Pioneers scored four runs in the second inning highlighted by a three-run double by
Chris Houston.
The Pioneers added another run in the third when
Josh Rush scored on a pickoff play.
Cal State Dominguez Hills got on the scoreboard with two runs in the fifth and scored three times in the sixth inning to trail 7-5.
East Bay added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Hector Iribe opened the inning with a triple and scored on a
Charlie Sharrer single. Sharrer reached second on a stolen base and later scored on a Houston fielder's choice.
Reliever
Zachary Wong allowed one run on two hits in 1.2 innings.
Houston had his biggest offensive game of the season with two hits and five RBI. Sharrer, Iribe and
Nick McManus all had two hits.
In the first game, the Pioneers received a solid outing from starting pitcher
Paul Jinkens. In eight innings of work, Jinkens allowed only one earned run while scattering eight hits. Jinkens recorded four strikeouts.
Kyle Pond had a sacrifice fly to give the Toros a 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as
Lincoln Clapper singled and later scored on a Toro error.
Cal State Dominguez Hills scored an unearned run in the fifth and added two more unearned runs in the seventh inning.
Clapper had a pair of hits while Wong retired the side in order in the ninth inning.
East Bay is now 8-21 in the CCAA and 10-26 overall. Cal State Dominguez Hills has a record of 13-18 in the CCAA . The Toros are 17-21 for the season.
The four-game series will conclude with a single game on April 10 at Pioneer Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
