PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Pioneer baseball team pushed across a run in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Grand Canyon University 3-2 on April 30.
In the top of the ninth inning,
Charlie Sharrer singled, advanced to second on a groundout and stole third. Sharrer came home on McManus' double.
Grand Canyon had two runners on base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but was unable to score.
The Pioneers tied the game 2-2 with a run in the top of the seventh. With one out,
Rex Blaylock reached on an error. McManus followed with a single. Both runners advanced on a double steal. Blaylock scored on an
Andrew Woolfe sacrifice fly.
Pioneer hurler
Paul Jinkens went the distance to earn his first victory of the season. Jinkens allowed only one earned run on seven hits and recorded six strikeouts.
Sharrer scored a pair of runs while Blaylock, McManus and
Chris Houston all had two hits.
The Pioneers, currently on a three-game winning streak, are 17-32 for the season. Grand Canyon has an overall record of 21-25.
Cal State East Bay will go for the three-game series sweep and conclude the 2011 season on Sunday, May 1 with a single game at Grand Canyon University. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
