East Bay Earns Doubleheader Split with Sonoma State

The Pioneer baseball split a doubleheader with visiting Sonoma State on April 12. The Seawolves held on to win the first game 7-6, while the Pioneers took the second contest, 5-3.

In the second game, Pioneer hurler Zachary Wong won his first decision of the season. In four innings, Wong yielded three runs on four hits with four strikeouts.

The Pioneers received good production from relievers Xavier De La Cruz, Paul Jinkens and A.J. Gallardo.

De La Cruz entered the game in the fifth inning and held the Seawolves scoreless for 1.2 innings. Jinkens got Cameron Cook to line out ending the sixth inning and retired the first two Sonoma hitters in the seventh. Gallardo relieved Jinkens and retired Kyle Jones on a fielder's choice to notch his first save of the season.

The Pioneers took advantage of two Sonoma wild pitches to score twice in the second inning and tie the game, 2-2.

Hector Iribe and Rex Blaylock each singled home a run as the Pioneers scored three times in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.

In the victory, Blaylock drove in a pair of runs while Scott Shields and Iribe each scored twice.

Sonoma State scored twice in the first and added a run in the second inning to grab a 3-0 lead in the first game.

Iribe opened the bottom of the third with a walk and later scored on a Chris Houston base hit.

The Pioneers went ahead 4-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Skyler Ellis singled to drive in Bret Gibson with the Pioneers' first run. Nick McManus walked with the bases loaded while Houston was hit by a pitch scoring Iribe to account for the Pioneers second and third runs of the inning.

The Seawolves tied the game in the fifth on a home run off the bat of O'Koyea Dickson.

Three Pioneer errors enabled Sonoma State to score three unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning and take a 7-4 advantage.

East Bay rallied with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Andrew Wolfe had a pinch hit single to drive to score Josh Rush to make the score 7-5. The Pioneers closed the gap to 7-6 as Charlie Sharrer drove in Ellis with a base hit.

The Pioneers stranded two runners in the eighth inning and were retired in order in the ninth inning.

Pioneer starting pitcher Johnny Volk allowed four runs and scattered eight hits in five innings. Reliever Nolan Cassidy didn't allow any earned runs and recorded three strikeouts in four innings of work.

Lincoln Clapper, Houston, Rush and Ellis all had two hits. Houston drove in a pair of runs.

With the doubleheader split, the Pioneers are 9-23 in CCAA play and 11-28 for the season. Sonoma State stands at 16-11 in the CCAA and 23-11 overall.

The Pioneers will play Cal State Monterey Bay in a four game series beginning on April 15.
