Pioneers Split with SF State to Earn Series Victory

HAYWARD, Calif. -
The Cal State East Bay baseball team split a home doubleheader with San Francisco State, taking game one 4-3, before falling 8-5 in game two on Tuesday at Pioneer Baseball Field. The Pioneers (8-21, 6-16 CCAA) picked up a 3-1 series victory with the win in game one after sweeping the Gators in a pair at Maloney Field in the Mar. 22 opener of the rescheduled series. 

Trailing 8-2 in the second game, the Pioneers rallied with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, Scott Shields hit a 2-0 pitch for a double scoring both Nick McManus and Jake Davis.

Pioneer reliever Nolan Cassidy retired the Gators in order in the top of the ninth inning. Lincoln Clapper opened the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk. Andrew Woolfe followed with a base hit. Christopher Houston singled to leftfield scoring Clapper. The Pioneers had the bases loaded with two outs, but Gator closer Kevin Dultz got Jake Davis to strikeout to end the game.

Woolfe was 3-for-5 at the plate with a run batted in. Clapper scored a pair of runs while Hector Iribe collected a pair of hits including a double.

The Pioneers received good production from their bullpen. Paul Jinkens went four innings with two runs allowed on five hits and three strikeouts. Nolan Cassidy pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball.

Charlie Sharrer hit a three-run home run as the Pioneers took game one, 4-3.

The Pioneers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Jared Berrier singled to drive in McManus who led off the frame with a base hit. Sharrer hit his team-leading third home run of the season as the Pioneer jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings.

San Francisco State narrowed the Pioneers' lead to 4-3 with a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Pioneer reliever Johnny Volk retired the final seven Gators to earn his first save of the season.

Starting pitcher Bryce Miller allowed one earned run and scattered six hits in 6.2 innings to win his third game of the season.

Sharrer had a pair of hits while Berrier was 2-for-3 at the plate to go with his RBI single.

With the doubleheader split, the Pioneers took the four-game series over the Gators 3-1 and are 6-16 in the CCAA and 8-21 for the season.

East Bay will travel to Pomona for a four-game series with the Broncos beginning on April 1.
