Big Seventh Inning Leads to East Bay Sweep of San Francisco State

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -
The Pioneer baseball team scored eight runs in the seventh inning to win the second game of a doubleheader 9-7 and complete a sweep over San Francisco State on March 22.

Trailing 3-1 in game two, the Pioneers erupted for eight runs in the seventh inning. Jared Berrier opened the inning with a single and later scored on a base hit by Aaron Brown. A fielder's choice by Jake Davis scored two runs and put the Pioneers ahead 4-3. Andrew Woolfe knocked in the Pioneers' fourth run with an infield single. Berrier added four insurance runs with a grand slam giving the Pioneers a 9-3 lead.

The Gators rallied with four runs in the bottom of the seventh highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Kelly Mast. Reliever Zachary Wong got Matthew Cummins to ground out with two runners on to end the game and complete the doubleheader sweep for the Pioneers.

Pioneer pitcher A.J. Gallardo improved to 4-3 for the season. Berrier drove in five runs for the Pioneers.

In the first game, Nick McManus singled to drive home Davis to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 first inning lead. The Gators answered with two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by Ian Fregosi.

East Bay regained the lead 4-2 with three runs in the fifth inning. Chris Houston opened the inning with a single. McManus doubled and Woolfe was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Charlie Sharrer followed with a base hit to score Houston and tie the game. Josh Rush hit into a double play as McManus crossed home plate with the go-ahead run. Dylan Johnson drove home Woolfe with a single.

The Gators closed the gap to 4-3 in the eighth inning. After two outs, Kevin Dultz doubled off Wong driving in Ben Mielke. Wong proceeded to strikeout pinch hitter Trevor Pasiecznik to end the Gators' threat.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Gators had the tying run at third with two outs. Wong got pinch hitter Michael Sanchez to pop out to end the game and give the Pioneers their second road win of the season.
Wong earned his third save of the season.

The Pioneers received a solid outing from starting pitcher Bryce Miller who allowed two runs on five hits in picking up his second win the season. Miller recorded a season-best seven strikeouts.

Davis went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. McManus also had two hits in four plate appearances and drove in his team-leading 15th RBI of the season.

Cal State East Bay improved to 5-13 in CCAA play and 7-18 overall. San Francisco State stands at 3-11 in the CCAA and 8-12 for the season.
