HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer baseball team put up a good battle before losing a doubleheader to Cal State San Bernardino 4-2 and 2-1 on March 12.
In the first game, the Pioneers pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead.
The Coyotes tied the game 1-1 in the fourth inning when Eric Dow doubled home Brandon Day. Mike Newell drove in Virgil Chavira with a double giving Cal State San Bernardino a 2-1 lead in the sixth.
Nick Heusterberg hit a solo home run as the Coyotes increased their lead to 3-1 in the seventh inning.
After the Coyotes scored another run in the top of the eighth, the Pioneers narrowed the gap with a run in the bottom of the inning. Pinch hitter
Aaron Brown opened the inning with a single and later scored on a
Nick McManus sacrifice fly.
The Pioneers went down in order in the bottom of the ninth as Coyote closer Josh Pond picked up his fourth save of the season.

Bryce Miller allowed two runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. Reliever
Johnny Volk hurled two scoreless innings.
In the second game, the Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Matt Winn.
The Pioneers tied the game 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. After one was out,
Lincoln Clapper doubled and advanced to third on a stolen base. Clapper scored on Brown's run scoring single.
Cal State San Bernardino pushed across the go-ahead run in the seventh as Ethan Chapman singled home Matt Haney.
Clapper opened the bottom of the seventh with a double and advanced to third on a pass ball. Pond retired the next three Pioneer hitters to record his five save of the season and secure the doubleheader sweep for the Coyotes.
The Pioneers received a good pitching performance from hurlers

Keith Schwecke and
Zachary Wong who combined to limit the Coyotes to two runs on four hits with four strikeouts in seven innings.
Cal State San Bernardino is 5-4 in CCAA play and 8-9 overall. The Pioneers stand at 3-12 in the CCAA and 5-17 for the season.
The four-game series will conclude with a single game on March 13 at Pioneer Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
