Pioneer Baseball Defeats Menlo, 11-4 on Saturday

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – After a season opening win on Friday, the Cal State East Bay baseball team won its second straight game on Saturday against Menlo, 11-4 at Pioneer Baseball Field.

GAME SUMMARY
 
After back-to-back singles by Essex Brown Jr. and Manny Garcia to start the bottom of the first inning, Luke Novitske singled to center field to drive in Brown Jr. for a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Quinn Ayres hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Garcia for a 2-0 lead. 

With Donovan Bailey and Samuel Esparza on base to start the bottom of the second inning, Garcia and Novitske drove them both in to double CSUEB's lead to 4-0. 

Although the Oaks scored three runs in the top of the third, the Pioneers got one run back in the bottom of the third when Luke Brown scored on an RBI groundout from Bailey. 

Brown Jr. scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth, and Luke Brown hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Garcia as the Pioneers led 7-3 through four innings. 

After a two-out triple by Cole Coffey, Luke Brown drove him in with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning for an 8-3 lead.

Three more runs were added to the Pioneers' lead. The third of the runs was another run for Brown Jr. on a wild pitch, which was the second of its kind in the game and third of the season. Through seven innings, CSUEB led 11-3. 

Menlo got one run back in the top of the eighth on a solo home run from Sage Pera, but the Pioneers went to 2-0 after finishing with an 11-4 win on Saturday.

  • Brown Jr. went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.
  • Garcia, Novitske and Luke Brown each had a pair of RBIs. 
  • On the mound, RJ Aranda picked up his first win of the season with 5.0 innings pitched, allowing two earned runs and striking out three. 
  • In just one inning of relief, James Colyer struck out all three batters faced in the top of the ninth.
