HAYWARD, Calif. —
The Cal State East Bay baseball team opens up its 2022 season at home this weekend, as the Pioneers play host to Academy of Art on Friday, Feb. 4, beginning at 2 p.m., before playing a doubleheader against the Urban Knights on Saturday, Feb. 5, beginning at 11 a.m.

The Pioneers were recently picked to finish seventh in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Preseason Coaches Poll, as CSUEB garnered 63 points to finish just outside of the top half of the conference behind sixth-place Stanislaus State (65).

Senior Samuel Esparza (.325/.381/.416) will lead an East bay offense that tied for third in the CCAA in batting average in 2020 (.301). Meanwhile, junior Mark Woinarowicz (2-1, 2.25 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) and sophomore Ethan Brodsky (1-2, 3.57 ERA, 1.10 WHIP) give CSUEB a set of strong arms in the rotation.

Academy of Art (0-1) is coming off a road defeat to Stanislaus State, 5-3, in its season opener on Feb. 1.
