ST. GEORGE, Utah. — The Cal State East Bay swim team competed against some of the best programs in the west at this weekend's Trailblazer Invite hosted by Dixie State University.
East Bay, which is ranked No. 20 in the latest Division-II CSCAA Top 25, also faced BYU, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, New Mexico State, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Northern Colorado, Cal State Bakersfield and UC Davis.
"This weekend's energy was great and it's an awesome experience to come out and swim in the same pool that we will be competing in for our PCSC Championships," said Pioneers head coach
Shane Pelton. "The level of competition is challenging. There were some very talented programs, but that's what the midseason championship is all about."
Some of the highlights of the weekend for East Bay include freshman
Delaney Carlson, who's 50 freestyle time of 23.94-seconds was an NCAA B cut. In addition, the the Missoula, Mont., native led off for the Pioneer 200 freestyle relay team that is now ranked No. 5 in Division II after posting a tme of 1:35.17 along with junior
Nani Welsh, freshman
Emma Knott and senior
Isabel Rishwain.
"To be honest, I am not surprised by her performance today, but excited," said Pelton. "Delaney has technically come a long way in a very short period of time and I think she is really starting to figure it out all out.
"The relays are what I like to call confidence builders. We had some huge efforts that set up nicely for our individual races the rest of the meet."
CSUEB will take a break for the holidays before returning to action at the San Diego State Quad Meet on Jan. 7, that will also include Fresno State, Colorado State and New Mexico.
